A Dozen Eggs

Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, I idolized Ben Hogan. We did not belong to a club, so I played municipal courses. Titleist was THE ball; but, they could only be purchased in a Pro Shop of a country club. My mother wanted me to have the best. So, my mother would go to the sports department at Leonard Bros. Department Store, where they had "bootleg" Titleists for sale. In order to protect the store from any prosecution, she would simply say, "I'll have a dozen eggs, please." The sales person would reach beneath the counter, grap a dozen Balata Titleists, put them in a bag, and the transaction would be done under the cloak of secrecy. I'm not surprised that the store would sell Titleists, as Marvin Leonard, who owned the store was a close friend of Hogan; and, Leonard was a big part of the development of Colonial Country Club. Thanks to you Titleist for many fond memories in golf, including the time that my mother bought me a dozen eggs.
