    I like to play in an annual club tournament where everyone hits off the red tees, and we move the women's tee up 50 yards or so on each hole except the par 3s. We play with a partner, full handicaps. I didn't play especially great yesterday, but I did have 3 chip in birdies. 2 of them came on stroke holes, so we put 2 eagles on the card. Not great, not embarrassing, we finished with a 61, -11. Expecting the winning team to be somewhere around minus 20. Instead, someone came in with a 44. -28! That equates to 8 birdies, and 10 eagles, assuming no pars.(we actually put 2 bogies on the card) Either, these people should be on tour, they holed out from the fairway several times, or their handicaps are completely inaccurate. I am going with the latter option. A little disappointing. We threw $15 into a pot, so money is not the issue, and like I said we did not play well enough to win anything, but something is wrong when a 2 person team comes in 28 under.

    I feel your pain and it's called Sand-baggin' Brad..... see it all the time and it's the reason I always lose to a double digit handicapper as I pretty much have to birdie every hole when I come up to one of these type of players and it's always, "Oh, Am I ever really 'on' today!"

    I never could understand how a team can do that well... You have a two man team and they shoot -28 ? Personally I find it very hard to believe. I am currently playing to an 8 handicap and my friend plays to a 4. When we pair up, one of us still has to make that 10 or 15 foot putt. Sorry, but even the pros don't make them 100% of the time.
    Something sounds a bit fishy to me. Did someone check their pencil ?

    I don’t know the condition of their pencil. But I do know my partner is a 20 handicap and there is a reason why he has a 20 handicap: he missed 4 putts 3 feet or less. He also parred a few holes for net birdies as well. Playing from forward tees, full handicaps one would expect some good scores, but not minus 28. Also, did I mention that at least 4 pins were in places I had never seen before. Oh well, it wasn’t a bad day. Actually, when you play a shortened course you don’t get tired so I went out and played another 18 after supper.

    Everyone playing has to keep a handicap with Golf Canada, so obviously they are not putting in all of their scores, or using selective memory.
    One of the tricks some guys use at our course, and guess it is within the rules is that they play from the back tees most of the time. So, the scores they do enter are inflated, then they play the forward tees in a tournament and tear the course up. I could do that as well, play the gold tees, never hit a par 4 in regulation and never get to hit an iron shot and get my handicap up to around a 15, but where's the fun in that? I play white or blue tees, make the occasional birdie and shoot around 80 most of the time.

    Imagine that a pair of individuals that shoot the round of their lives in a tournament. Fudging of the handicaps happens everywhere. If people have to cheat to make themselves feel better have at it.

    Red tee classic sounds like a good time Brad. Play well and keep a stiff upper lip.

    Such a common occurrence. For me, I have adopted the approach that events like the one you've described Brad are just social events. If I participate in one, I just do my best to enjoy the day with whomever I am playing with.

    My only criteria is that I want to play at or near my best, but golf being golf, I understand that I cannot always be "on" regarding my game ... especially at 7:00 AM given that I am not a morning player!! There are always people out there that will try and "game the system"!

    It happens everywhere...a buddy of mine played in a 2-man over the weekend and the winning team posted 19 under on a 6300 yard course (only one other team was in double digits and they were at 10 under). My buddy said that if they are truly that good why bother playing in a weekend 2-man with no monetary payout (although they did win a pair of tickets to a Cards game).

    Shoe was on the other foot tonight. I played a match against a "2" handicap. My index is 8.7(8.9 after today's game)
    The conditions in Southern Ontario right now are dry, and I am a short hitter. I make my living around the green. So today this guy had to give me 7 shots, and he did not play very well. I was 2 over on the front, only hit 4 greens all day, but I only had 26 putts. I was 6 up at the turn, and he was accusing me of being a sandbagger. Maybe tonight when he reflects, he will remember that he hit bad drives on 2(over into the next fairway over trees, lost a ball on 3, missed an easy up and down from a great drive to just off the green on 4, hit it to 30 feet on the next par 3, and was lucky to half the hole, hit it in the trees on 6, barely kept it in play on 7, and lost a ball on 9.) Maybe it is easier to blame me for playing to my handicap. Either way, I beat him 7 and 6. It was a good day. On to round 2.

    Dino is right on point... Enjoy the day and have fun with your friends.
    Most of the time these type of events outside of our clubs are charity tournaments. As such - the real winner is the charity.
