AP1 irons

  1. I recently purchased a set of AP1 irons, 6 - W. All the clubs are standard length & lofts. Since the wedge loft is 48 degrees I now carry that & an additional 52 degree GW. I was wondering if there is any disadvantage to weakening all the lofts in my AP1 set by 2 degrees so I can eliminate the extra GW.

    Hi Larry,

    Thanks for the question.

If you were to weaken the lofts of your new AP1's, you could expect to see a higher ball flight. As well, you would be adding two degrees of bounce. It is tough to say whether there would be a dis advantage, but if you are looking to close the gap, it is certainly worth a try.

My best suggestion would be to see a local fitter and try the new lofts in front of a launch monitor.

Keep us up to date and let us know if you have any other questions.

  3. Yes I think there is a disadvantage because by taking the gap wedge out of your bag you are limiting the number of shots you can do around the greens. I know from personal experience that if you take into consideration a variety of shots around the green (flops, pitches, bump & runs) your gap wedge would be very useful. Both I and many other people would probably agree that short game is much more important than long game so why limit your short game for more loft???

Couldn't agree more. I would rather have bigger gaps around my long clubs than give up control and options around the green.

Absolutely James. Would much rather have more options around the green. I see so many people crushing drivers, but once they get inside 100 yards, they start giving away strokes! Scores are made with shorter clubs and putters, not drivers and long irons!
  7. Thanks for all the comments. The problem was created when I bought the new Titleist  irons which gave me an additional wedge (44 & 48) where my old set only had the 47 degree PW that I complemented with a GW (52) & SW (58). I solved problem by replacing my 3w & 5w with a 4w. This way I can use all 4 wedges which I agree are important scoring clubs. I can mix & match the woods depending on the course I'm playing.

I wouldn't reset all the irons.  The AP1s do have a W2 at 52 degrees.  The only question is do you have room in the bag for all the wedges?  If you have a 6-W2, a SW, and a LW, putter and driver, that leaves 3 clubs between 6I and driver.  I would have to adjust the bag  based on course between the 3W and one of the GW.    It would be worth a fitting to see if you might need to just adjust the PW by a degree, and the W by 2 degrees, and then see if you have the best SW for you.
