  1. Hey guys was just wondering about feedback of the ap1 vs ap2. I was fitted the other day for irons and really enjoyed the feel of the ap1 irons. I got pretty good results with spin rates and everything. The guys at the golf shop were suggesting the ap2 irons due to me being about an 8 handicap and playing alot more this year they expect me to improve. My question is I understand the difference between the 2 but would I be wrong going with the ap1? The reason I ask is the ap1 is more of my budget but I will spend the extra for the ap2 if it deems necessary. Thanks for any help!

If you're anything like me you probably knew the answer to this question before posting.

AP2 definitely has the cool factor of forged, played on tour (as a full set), and is one of the best selling irons out there.

    BUT

AP1 can hit all the same shots, you get the same shaft options, and get the benefit of a progressive set of irons. I invested in AP1s with AMT shaft and have zero regrets. They are excellent.

    Hey MG,

I got fitted myself from a very qualified fitter in Norther Virgina about 3 weeks ago. Went through a detailed fitting for both irons, hybrid, and wedges. Going into my fitting I was considering numerous factors and wanted to leave all my options open regarding what irons, what shafts, shaft lengths, lie angles, shaft type I would consider. One big factor I had to consider was my age and subsequent diminishing swing speed. I'.ve been playing golf 30+ years and age is starting to catch up with my swing and will continue to affect my swing. I am now going on 64 so I can no longer hit the ball 300 yards. So I wanted to be as open minded as possible going into the fitting and I did not want my biases to affect my decisions. I have played blades most of my life. My favorite set of irons actually was the Titleist 735. I still have a 1 handicap so I can still score. So after given my fitter my objectives, my fitter had me look at the entire Titleist line. If I went with my heart I would probably would have been perfectly happy walking out of the store with a new set of 716 MBs. My fitter had my try the 716CB, 716MB, 716T-MB, 716 AP1, and the AP2. I brought my set of 735 which I have still been playing. Long story short is I could hit all of these clubs well. However, when I looked at the results and factored distance as well as accuracy (i.e. dispersion) the AP1 gave me the best dispersion compared with all others. My fitter had me hit balls from a bay with a door which opened to a drving range. He also had a Trackmanmonitoring my ball flights. He also had me go outside and hit the AP1 out of some thick rough and this was what really convinced me that the AP1 was the best choice for me. This club is an outstanding performer. For all of my research I could gather from the Internet, the AP1s were given glowing reviews and compared favorably with the look, size and performace of the 714 AP2s. All the other clubs performed exceptionally well. I would recommend the CBs if accuracy and working the ball are your most important criteria. I may even consider later this year picking up a 716T-MB 2 or 3 iron as these clubs work very well when you need a long accurate shot on a tight fairwya in place of a wood. In a nutshell, the AP1s are an outstanding club and you should have no hesitation about chosen this club as your first choice. It is very forgiven and very long. You can work the ball well with it but the MB and CB are just a notch bit better at doing this. If you have a very high swing speed then the MB is the best choice.

I received my clubs, which also ncluded the 70 gram graphite shafts, last week. As the bad weather had just turned good for one day here in Virginia I decided I just had to go out to the course and try my new clubs out. In a nutshell, I was extremely pleased with my choice. I was hitting these irons long, consistent, and straight. On a few slighty off-hit shots (toward the toe) I was pleasantly surprised as I did not lose much distance. With my 735s, on off hit strike would have left me a liitle short of the green. The AP1s put me near pin-high but off the right side of the green. These clubs are truly a player improvement club. Skilled golfers can use these and benefit from them. Like I mentioned before, these clubs might not be the best choice if you have the clubhead speed of a touring pro as the ball would probably go to high. If you do not have this level of swing speed then the AP1 is an awesome choice and you will have no regrets.

Hope this is of some benefit to you. You going to a fitter was a smart choice. Getting fitted is so important for any golfer considering a new set of sticks as ther are many factors that going into making a good choice for you. I would recommend you go with your head and not your heart when making your selection. A good fitter can help greatly in helping you make the right decision.

  5. Interesting set, you seem to have: Driver, fairway wood, hybrid, 816 h1?, AP1 5-p, 2 wedges (52 and x)? and the putter? is that correct?

  7. Well thanks guys for all the feedback but I appreciate it. I ended up ordering the AP2's. I figured I could not go wrong with either one so I went for player iron instead just trying to focus on improving my game. So we will see what happens. Thanks again!!!

    Spruce Grove,

I just sold my 714 AP2 and now I'm trying to decide between the 716 AP1 or AP2. My one concern is the higher launch of the AP1's. Will I be able to play the same shaft or will the higher launch of the 1's have a balloon effect on the 2's? I know I can use the launch monitors but was wondering if there is some real life data.

    Thanks
