Effect on head weight or shaft stiffness if I shorten iron shaft by 1/4 inch

    2 years ago I was fitted for 2019 t200 irons and it was decided by the fitter that I required 1/4 inch longer iron shaft with standard lie. Recently I have been to a Titleist demo day and it has been suggested that I don’t need the 1/4 inch shorter shaft. So I was wondering whether or not just to grip down on the irons or in fact get them shortened . Just wondering what the effect of shortening the shaft has on head weight or shaft stiffness, if any .

    Shortening your club 1/4" will decrease swing weight 1.5 swing weight points- no effect on shaft stiffness . If you decrease grip weight by 5 grams you would gain back 1 swing weight point. I wouldn't be too concerned with swing weight @ 1.5 swing weight points. Aslo 2 grams added to the head would add 1 swing weight point, but, again I wouldnt be concerned at all with making up all of the swing weight loss.

    In answer to your question. Grip down and play that way for a while and see how that affects you game. Then make the decision about having them cut 1/4 an inch. You never mentioned how the 1/4 longer is affecting your game.

    It depends which end you are cutting...The butt end is always stiffer than the tip, regardless if the shaft is advertised as as stiff tipped shaft or not. Just the nature of the amount of material. So, cutting from the tip will definitely stiffen the shaft, and cutting the butt will soften the shaft, but not in equal amounts. Also matters if you have a parallel tip or tapered tip...you usually don't cut the tip of a tapered tipped shaft, but I've seen it done if it's only a small amount...1/4 inch would probably work.

    Who would cut the tip of a shaft just to shorten a set of irons??? You would cut the butt end... and it DOES NOT make the shaft softer by doing so. No idea where you got that information.
