    Hi,

Im am unsure whether to get fitted for my putter as it cost $100 (1/3 the price of a scotty putter ) and i am not sure if it can really help to improve my putting scores. If you have been experience with putter fitting please share your experience on whether your putting average has improved and your recommendation. One more thing, i am very insistent on a blade putter which makes my selection even narrower, does that make a putter fitting even less favourable? Thanks in advance for sharing.

  2. Most pros will always have good insight about putting. I believe putting lessons could be some of the most help a golfer can get. It wouldn’t hurt to get some tips from your local pro. It’ll be worth it in the end.

My putter fitting was part of a package that included a couple of lessons. Probably $150 US plus putter. A putter fitting is more nuanced than a driver fitting. Swing path, loft, lie, dominant eye, correct length to get eyes over the ball all come into play. The swing path and toe hang work with each other. Cameras are more important than ball spin/speed, etc.
Once we determined what my swing will be and used an appropriate putter, the last lesson time focused on distance control. Green reading was included but still more of an art than I can rationalize scientifically.
I need a better sight line than a blade offers. No shortage of mallets to choose from.
If you are closer to 36 putts versus 30 per round, better putting will take more strokes off your score than a driver.

I love my Scotty Cameron Newport 2 but my biggest putting issue is getting lined up correctly. I tend to aim right. I think there is a mallet in my future as well.

Andy - in the event that you have not gotten the putter fitting, I highly recommend it! I was fit for a putter last summer when I was down in Sea Island, GA and I was put into a mallet Scotty with a custom loft and lie based on my putting stroke. The fitting got my ball to start on line 95% of the time and my distance control improved significantly. Ultimately, the putter fitting gave me much more confidence on and around the greens.

Your putter is the most important club in the bag. Get fitted for one that is tailored to your putting stroke, dominant eye, set up and even your height and then practice with it and you will see results. Go into the fitting with an open mind. Let your putting stroke and the data help your decision. During my fitting(s) I found that I was better suited to a face balanced/mallet type putter and that’s what I’ve used since then. I still have some blades that I flirt with but I always go back to a mallet.

Odds are you use your putter more than any other club in the bag so spend your money accordingly. Good luck and have fun.

Pros get fitted for their putters and most importantly, they put in thousands of hours practicing. If you are considering getting fitted, are you committed to putting in the time to practice, practice, practice to become a better. If you are not going to practice, no use getting a new putter. The old saying goes, it's the indian, not the arrow. Just sayin' with respect.
