Ok to start out i am a 16 index, i hit most greens and almost all fairways and have a above average short game. I suffer from not practicing enough at the greens on putting feel but the rest of my game is great. I hit 290-300 drives consistantly, my swing speed is 110, and i use "tour level" equipment for all my equipment. Driver Launcher DST 9*, Staff 3-5 woods, CG Black Pearl Tour irons 4-pw, wedges 56-60*, and Anser 1 putter. I typically use Tour I(s) balls, TM Penta, or the current Pro V1x. I can really crank a lot of spin on all my clubs and actually avoid the Pro V1 because i gain to much spin on my driver and woods. Kind of hard to gain more distance when the ball drops and stops on my drives. But any ways before i ramble on more i have done extreme test on almost vertually every mainstream ball. Thats not including the low end golf balls below $20 a dozen, besides the Gamer. With all my testing i gain to much spin and balloon my shots with the NXT Tour and lost 10 yards on all my irons, normal distance with both Pro Vs, Penta is the longest but does not spin enough for me, Tour i(s) is perfect from all aspects for me but its not durable enough for me. So my question is i want to know if i should stick to the Pro V1x or Pro V1. With the V1 i lose 10 yards off the tee and woods but gain more feel, not spin, around the greens and have a higher flight while the V1x is normal to me, lower flight and has a harder feel around the greens. Both spin the same to me. Just the added flight with the Pro V1 gives me a steeper landing that will spin back more. Any thoughts?

Here is my suggestion... first determine which ball gives you the best "short-game" performance and then get fitted for a driver head / shaft combination that "fits" that ball.  I was fortunate enough to be fitted by the Titleist Tour Van guys and we found that be changing driver shafts I was able to improve my launch angle and reduce spin (no more "balloons") that resulted in longer, straighter drives.  But first you must decide on what ball gives you the best chance on and around the green as that is really where the game is really played.  Good luck!

Well to be honest i was fitted entierly by Cleveland Golf and for Srixon. I use Wilson Staff woods because they set up just like the launchers but cuts through the rough more. I never liked Titleist clubs because to me they feel hard and do not set up right for me. Shaft is even fitted along with loft, tipped shafts, stiffness, lies, ect. My driver well i even tried a 8* and even a 7* with multiple shafts, cant drop my driver spin that much because of how i swing.

    Hi Mannequin,

Great topic and it's great to see how thorough you have been with your testing. As noted above, I would recommend taking a look at short game performance and which ball is going to ultimately lower your score. Most game changing differences and score changing differences are found near the greens and on approach shots into the green.

Have you ever gone out and played 9-holes with the Pro V1 and then 9-holes with the Pro V1x to compare how each golf ball performs in playing conditions? This is a great way to conduct an on-course evaluation if you are unable to play the golf balls side-by-side during a casual round.

Going through this type of evaluation should help you zero in on which golf ball is performing best for you across most areas of your game. Here is a link to our on-course evaluation scorecard which will help you conduct the testing.

Well i got out on the course for the first time in a while and i decided before playing to hit the practice greens. Chipped a few pro v1s, then the xs, then i tossed in a few of the current NXT Tours. Found less spin on close shots but on half wedge and full wedge shots it was quite similar to the pro v1x. The last time i played the 2011 NXT Tour was in January and i lost 10 yards on all shots. At first i thought it was just the ball. Then i thought it was just because i was in California. But now sense i played them today with my new swing the ball was as long as the pro v1x, spun about the same on full wedge, approach shots, and dropped and stopped on the greens even with my 4 iron. Normally i dont get a ball to do that unless its a tour level ball. Though yes this ball feels a bit more firm because of the cover its really actually softer and easier to compress then the tour balls. Easier compression, the more control all around i have. I hit the ball to the rough on the right and had a tight lie next to trees and roots. To top it off i had a big cedar tree in front of the approach dead in front of me about 50 yards out. I tried a normal cut shot i would. Instead of over cooking i hit it dead center of the green and was really impressed. Then on a par 5 on the back i had a really bad tee shot from rushing my swing and hit it on a hill to the right then slipped on that swing and ended up behind a London oak tree on the left hand side of the fair way. Well on the other side of this tree is the green with the flag in the far back right. I decided well its a bigger curve to the shot than the cut shot i had on the front side. So i waited for the other group in front of me tee to finish up in case it didnt draw enough into the green and ended up going into the tee box. Well surprise! I hit a 75 yard draw into the green and stopped in a foot of the pin from 150 out with a 8 iron. To top it off i also almost had a hole in one with my 5 iron. Par 3 182 yards but is up hill, once more pin is back and was playing 205. I hit a high straight 5 iron and hit a foot in front of the pin tapped it then stopped not even a quarter hanging over the cup. Didnt drop but for a none tour ball this is extremely surprising in all aspects of the game. The best plus to this ball is it dose have less side spin off the tee, Not sure if its the compression im getting of it and utilizing both cores and cutting the side spin off, but is still really playable off the tee. Pro V1 fans and Pro V1x fans if you are not a single digit handicap and struggle a little off the tee, do yourself a favor try the NXT Tour.

I play two to three rounds of golf per week and play with all kinds of balls. However, if I want to play serious golf, shape my shots (draw and fade on purpose) at 65, I like to play with the Pro V1x. The Pro V1x gives me more distance than does the Pro V1 (which was designed for golfers with a faster swing speed than mine) and gives me the same ability to draw and fade a shot as does the Pro V1. So, if your swing speed is not up there with the "Big Boys", I'd use the Pro V1x. If you are out for just a good time, or just want to hit a strait shot, any of the top name balls on Walmart's isle will give you good results.

  9. I agree with Mike. Play 9 holes with the Pro V1, then 9 with the Pro V1x. Practice some short game shots, putting, etc.. Here's another helpful link: http://www.titleist.com/golf-ball-fitting/
