I recently went to my local golfshop, and was told that the Pentas and the Prov1's have the same problem. They both have a thin facover, which results in cutting the face after multiple wedge shots. He said that once you get to the higher quality balls, such as hese two, you have the same dilema. The covers are thin, which reults in spin, but after a while you start to cut the face with your wedges. Wanted to see if anyone has had this problem of cutting the face?

Can't speak on the Penta, but I have had some "shearing" of the ProV1 and ProV1x cover when I have hit a really crisp wedge shot from a tight lie.  But that was with a Vokey with the "old" grooves that had really sharp edges.  I have yet to play the "new" Vokey with the C-C grooves (I am waiting for the new Spin Mill 4's scheduled to come out in November).  Greg

I play Vokey wedges, and I play both the Pro V1 and the Penta ball - I have NEVER had a problem with tearing up or cutting or damaging in anyway the cover of a ball.  I've heard of it happening but I've never witnessed it myself.  I hit the ball pretty hard - SW - 100 yrds, and I spin the ball plenty, but I have no idea how this can happen to a ball if you hit it in the center of the club.

I also play Vokey wedges and hit a 54° wedge 110 yards with lots of spin. I've never had a Pro V1 or V1x cut after a wedge shot. Some other balls, for example, are usually good for only one full wedge shot for me. I have had what looks like a bit of color come off, but it is not a cut and the shape always seems intact. I play on until I loose it.

All the high end balls have a thin cover, most balls have a thin cover.

This person is probably trying to steer you to the ball that he makes the most money buy selling.

yes i have had this exact problem. The first hole at the course i play is a 296 yard par 4 and i hit driver wedge and always the ball is ripped up by the wedge on the first shot. With the prov1, prov1x, and penta.

Isaiah, I have this happen from time to time. It has been my experience that all balls do this though. Even the hardest balls you can find will get cut up with wedges. If your grooves are clean and you swing with decent speed you will eventually cut the ball up.

It has been my experience that the Penta is a more durable ball than the ProV1x. I prefer the feel of the ProV1x with all my shots from driver to putter but I have had worse luck cutting those balls.

I think they Penta has more durability then the Pro V1x just not around the same green side control. Im currently using conforming grooves on my wedges to help with the "skinning" problem and still have the same results with the Pro V1x and occasionally with the Penta. Both really great balls.

My opinion on Penta Vs Pro V1s is

Penta: more durable, lower flight off woods, rising shot on long irons but dose not come in steep, Trajectory really picks up as you go down the line of clubs and lands steeper, soft ball on every shot and feels great when putting.

Pro v1x: more control in general, mid/high flight off long irons and woods, little more gain in how high the ball is on mid to low irons and hop and stop on all shots into the green. Around the green this ball holds tighter lies then the Penta, has a more ferm feel on all shots including the putter, and you can be really aggressive with this ball on all shots and able to predict it.

Both balls i dont see durable enough for bunker shots i usully get bad scuffs on them from any sand.
