The practice facilities at my club use yellow Pinnacle range balls and our chipping area uses ProV1 practice balls. I have found that the range balls are 10-15 yards shorter than the ProV1x balls I use on the course but the ProV1 practice balls exhibit the same spin and bite as the ball I use on the course. You can imagine how many times a range ball gets hit over it's lifetime. Do others find the difference in their range balls as compared to the actual ball you play ?

Range balls on many golf ranges are "limited distance balls." Usually these balls are 1 to 2 clubs shorter than your game balls. On these ranges (using the yellow, range-specific Pinnacles), I would not use these balls to judge any of your club distances.

Unfortunately most ranges have pretty poor golf balls.  It makes it difficult to dial in your clubs when you are hitting something that will perform much differently than your normal setup.  For me, I only go to the range to loosen up or to work on a particular swing move.  If I want to actually work on my game, I go to the course late in the evening when no one is around.  Then I can hit multiple balls from anywhere on the hole.  For me, that's a much better use of my time.

Range balls to me are considerably shorter on distance.  When you're on the range, you may want to just focus on shot shape and direction.  If you can get these visuals in your mind then you should be good to tee off or otherwise.  I don't go to the range to work on distance as a main part of my pre-round warm-up or practice sessions rather that process and shots I may be hitting during the round according to my yardage book game plan. Some of us go to the range to work on a 1 or 2 things to improve our game.  Range balls get beat and performance characteristics diminish due to wear and tear.
