So what is this test ball? Is it a new golf ball that Titleist is going to introduce? And how did you get to test them?

I played two rounds with the prototype Titleist ball. I really liked the feel. A bit softer than the Pro V I normally use. Seemed to go farther off the irons, but maybe it was just the day. Great feel with the pitches and chips. Maybe it was wishful thinking but it sort of felt like a Balata ball...

I agree, they did feel just a little bit softer, I did notice though that I was getting more spin with the Pro V1 then the test ball though. Overall though its one of the best balls I've ever hit.

I've played 18 with the test balls and found them to be a little softer feeling, which I liked.  The spin rate into greens and with wedge shots was great for my game.  Probably should compare against the Pro V1x, versus the Pro V, which I currenly play.

I was in a tournament this past week end and thought I would try the test ball out.. They would not carry as well as past Titleist .  They were almost a club short ex. an eight iron say 150 yards...they would only carry 140 or so, and didn't stop on the greens either.  I changed to a normal pro v and the distance changed.  The same iron(8) would carry the expected range.  My handicapp is 4 so I kinda have a feel.  Additionally, the ball seemed heavy in your hand too.

This is the same as my experience.  I felt that the test balls played a little shorter than the Pro V1 and had less spin -- they even felt a little heavier off the club.  I preferred the Pro V1 to the test ball in every way.

I really enjoyed playing with the test balls. I agree that it was not as long as the Pro V1x. I found it spun a little more than the v1x, which i liked. Felt great coming off the club head, with good distance. Seems to me like an in-between v1 and v1x

I got this ball from a friend who got them in the mail. the test ball felt very light and soft. when swinging through it with my driver it felt like there was nothing there. It was perhaps just as long as a pro v1x if not just a tad bit shorter. great control and spin around the greens. Holed out for eagle with it from 130 yards with my pw.

It really irritates me to see these test balls on ebay. I hope its not anyone from here. That would be rediculous for someone to be selected for an oppotunity like this and then try to sell the balls on ebay.

Will it be disclosed what these test balls are?  and if so does anyone know when, i did like them when i played them, but i got some better results from my Pro V1... still the feel of the new ball was good. 

Did anyone else feel they were a touch harder off the putter...?

I received the test balls too.  Found them to be similar in play to my ProV1X with a driver but felt they were a little softer, but longer by 5 yards or more with my irons.  Would choose my Titleist AP1 9 iron from about 135 and be over the green.  Normally would judge a 185/190 to be a 4 hybrid, but hit this same club to the back fringe of the green on a 185 yard par 3.

I just finished a round using the new prototype balls sent to me this week.

Fantastic!

What I appreciated about the new ball was its ability to hold the flight line in the wind, its soft feel off the clubface, and its workability in general.

I play the Titleist ProV1; so the performance of the test ball wasn't radically different from my "normal" ball.  I noticed better results, though, playing the prototype from 100 yards/50yards out--the ball held the greens without spinning off.  On full shots into the green, the prototype still held, despite spinning back, maybe, 3-4 feet.  I do not  play for a big "spin factor," so the new ball was perfect for me.  With my Titleist 905 S driver, I thought the distance to be about the same, still with that great feel in the hands.  Same with the irons...being a blade player, the ball worked nicely and I really did not sense any great difference between it and the ProV1.

I'd definitely play the new prototype ball every day.  Based on what I saw with it, I may have found a new favorite!

I played the 3 balls you sent me I didnt notice much of a differance from the pro v I use. I gave one to a friend who felt it spun to much  his slice seemed bigger. it was no easier to find in the woods and I noticed it didnt float . I would use it even with what I think were larger dimples. That could accouht for the extra spin.

After receiving the test balls I played a few practice rounds with them. The balls felt very similar to the Pro V1 that I do play mostly.  The test balls seemed a little hotter than the Pro V1's that I had in my bag. I hit longer drives and iron shots with the test ball. Maybe 10 yards with the driver and 5 with my long and mid range irons. It could have been that I was just putting better swings on the test balls. As a 9 handicap player my swings do vary slightly from swing to swing. The performance of the ball with wedge shots to the green and chip shots around the green seemed very much the same as the Pro V1, but the test ball did not seem to stop or spin as well as the Pro V1. I did like the test ball and would play it, but my preference would still be the Pro V1.

I recently played your test ball and it performed identically to the pro v 1 I currently play. It was about the same off the tee and w /my irons. The noticable difference was the way it spinned w /wedges. I was never able to spin the pro v 1 consistently. Overall I liked its performance , but noticed little difference.

I truly enjoy taking part in this. I love the new ball. Can't wait for them to come out.

Just got a sleeve of golf balls to test.  I would like to say thanks for making the balls look like regulation Titleist, instead of having a triangle on them.  It's easier for me to evaluate when they have the same markings as a regular Titleist.  I know it is just a mental thing, but I like looking down and seeing "Titleist" on the ball rather than something else (like a triangle).  I plan on hitting them tomorrow.

I would really like the chance to try these prototype golf balls out. I just havent been lucky enough to be selected.

Two rounds with the test ball.  I am a 11 handicaper Saturday morning golfer who on rare occasions shoots in the high 70's and a few anomolies in the low 70's depending on how often I play.  Last Saturday, with the 'test' ball, I shot a 72 and hit the ball a little longer (3-5 yds) off the tee and mostly down the middle.  Irons were the same - little longer.  The ball seemed to hold its line better.  I agree with others who said it has a softer feel.  Reminded me of the older ba'la'ta'la (pronunciation is an old joke) balls except the cover took a beating and still looked good.  I hope they go into production with these as I will change from my pro v1's

I just receieved an email stating I had been selected for the golf ball testing.  Im anxious to get them and see how they stack up and perform.  I will make another post with my review.

I played two rounds with these balls.  I am a 35 HC so I am always looking for an edge.  I am very impressed with the overall performance of the balls especially on drives and and on the green. Very true roll and maybe a little more distance on drives.  Hope that I do not lose one of these since I hope to play a few more rounds with them.  Please tell me what type these were so I can get them when they go into production

I played with these balls on three different golf courses, at three different times of day, on obviously different days of the week.  If i were to overthink this, i might even insert details about my mental state that day, as well as my overall fitness as it relates to my diet and workout routine. 

I found the feel of the ball to be an equal balance of "firm yet fair" meaning that compared to the current ProV1 i play, it seemed to pop a bit more off the face but still had a great feel. 

I'm not a big fan of big backspin.  The ProV1 seems to get away from me at times.  This ball seemed a bit more deliberate and conserative with its spin.  On several shots, i found myself wishing i was getting more spin on the greens.  The simple fix was to be more accurate with my club choice. 

The durability of the ball was wonderful.  Again, compared to my ProV1, these balls lasted much longer. 

Distance seemed to be on point with my current ball choice.  I found i had to strike the ball exactly as i wanted the ball to react, as this ball was very responsive. 

Overall i would rate this ball as durable and precise.  I enjoyed the feel very much.  Please send more.  :)

First let me thank Titleist for the chance to be part of the golf ball testing.

The first thing I did was head to the putting green. The ProV (which is my ball of choice)  and the test sleeve.  The ProV has a soft feel which is what I like when putting. I would put the test ball and the ProV in the same class when it comes to putting both are very good.

Off the tee, both the Prov and the test ball gave me pretty close to the same distance and ball flight. control was great with the test ball I was able to work it left to right or right to left. The test ball seem to have a little more jump off the club face.

100 yards in this is where I really liked the test ball. I was able to stop it on a dime, spin it back if needed or let it roll out depending on the shot I was trying to play. I did notice I had alot of one hops and stops. I had to really go after it to get it to back up, which I liked it made me focus on my ball striking more. I give the test ball the edge over the ProV here.

The feel between the test ball and the ProV is pretty close. The ProV to me as a softer cover feel in my hand then the test ball, but off the club face the feel is very close, maybe the new test ball cover is designed that way for durability. The test ball is very consistence off the tee, the second shot, on around and on the green.

Over all I liked the new ball alot, one question how can I get my hand on more of them??

The test ball was very different from the normal Pro V1's as i felt is was a very firm ball and much harder to spin. It feels very solid but the ball was releasing much more than normal with all clubs on the greens. Thank you for allowing me to test them.

I tried the new pro v1 last week and found them to be slightly firmer than the old ones.It seemed to have less spin.This  week I got the new prov1x test ball and loved it . It was longer it spun more and had great feel on and around the greens.I will be playing these balls.

I tested these new balls and found them to excellent in all respects. I would be very interested in buying these and I hope they come on the market soon.

I finished testing the new balls on several courses I usually play.  My overall impression was good.

My average driving distance was about 5 yards more when I hit it on the sweet spot.  Off center hits seemed to react the same as the Pro-V1.

The ball had a good feel off of the club, especially with irons and chipping.

I do not spin the ball much so I can't comment on that other than to say I did not detect any difference between the test ball and the Pro-V1.

Putting also felt solid.

The cart path seemed to scratch the ball cover as much as any other ball I have used.  Sorry, I guess the idea is to stay away from the cart paths.

All in all the test ball performed well, at least as good as the Pro-V1.

The Prototype is a hybrid between the Pro V1 & Pro V1x.  Over all for me it has an average of 5 yds more than the V1 & 5 yds less than the V1x.  The Prototype putts truer than both the Pro V1 & Pro V1x hands down.  The Proto has the soft feel of the V1 off the putter but the roll of the V1x.  The chips & pitches were very easy to control. With the Prototype my fairway 3w, 5w & 21deg Hybrid were in definite control with a slight draw that i liked & was so easy to control.  With the V1 there was to much spin (hook) & the V1x was less spin going right (fade).  This Prototype is the best all around ball that I have played.  It added 5-10 yds off tee, an average of 5yds off my irons & it spun more on my wedges making the ball go higher & landing softer with no loss of distance.

Club pro's were salivating for the Test ball. I gave each of them the ball after my use & asked them to give me their feed back. One of the Club Pro's waited for me on the 18th tee Box & asked if he could hit it. He did & WOW did he send it into orbit. He liked the way it felt off the driver. Bottom line, seriously, is that it reacts like an V1x has the softness of the V1. Thin Bladed shots still got there, no loss of distance, the hooks & fades were not as severe they "Held their Plane".  The shot dispersion was tighter with the Prototype. I was swinging well & I took that into consideration but every once in a while after the 4 rounds of playing with the Prototype some of those old, bad & sneaky habits did show up & I know that the other balls would have not performed as well.

My regular golf ball is the ProV and the side by side testing that I had done was not favorable to the test balls.  I don't know what kind of ball it was but the color was shinny compared to the ProV which reminded me more of the non-tour balls.

I would say I couldn't tell any difference in the length off the tee, it's to hard to tell on the course with too many variables.  However around the green I definitely saw a difference in how the ball felt coming off the face of the club and what the green holding capabilities were.  The ProV left softer on the face and definitely held the greens better.  I actually took the balls after a round to the practice area and hit several shots with both balls and the ProV was just flat out better!

When putting - again the ProV felt softer off the putter head and the feel for distance was there, where the test ball again felt harder and more difficult to get the distance down on longer putts.

I don't have any idea what type or quality of test ball was sent to me, but I would keep my ProV over it without a doubt.

Are these golf balls that we will be receiving like the ProV1x or just regular ProV1's? Just wondering bc i will be receiving some soon!

I played the prototype balls today and I was very happy.   Lately I have been playing the Penta ball from TM.  I liked the new ball better in every aspect except distance off the tee.  However, I did gain a few yards on my iron shots and I felt like I could actually feel the ball compressing at impact much more than the Penta or the ProV1x (another ball I often play). 

The feel off the putter face was amazing and the ball "checked" nicely on chip shots. Overall, this ball is a winner and I look forward to playing more rounds with this ball.

Thank's for comparing it with another competitors ball. I am going to try it with a Penta and a Pro V1x.

I would think Titleist would want to know how their ball stacks up against competitors rather than their own ball.

But I do want to thank those who did test it and give feedback as it will give me some things to look for.

I was able to play 9 holes with the TEST GOLF BALL and compared its performance to the other 9 holes with a PRO V1X. Here were some of my thoughts.

I felt the TEST BALL had a more durable cover. Rather than a scuff from the current PRO V1X, the cover seemed to get groove cuts from fullswing wedge shots. I noticed a bit more edges from groove tares on the ball after 9 holes.

Due to the cover having a little more toughness to it, it didn't quite check up on chips like the PRO V1X. It seemed to get to the release quicker. 

On full iron shots, the ball performed well. It had a drop and stop action to it. I attempted to hit my regular pitching wedge shot over the flag and have it spin back, but the TEST BALL didn't seem to spin back as much as the current PRO V1x's did. I did play on softer greens and that seems to reduce the spin back action for any golf ball.

Off the tee, it held its line well in the wind. I noticed it to be a bit longer, and maybe even have a higher ball flight. The feel of compression was great as all the PRO V1's feel. 

I have 2 more to play with, and I will give further feed back as I discover more about the ball when I get to play again.

Overal, I felt the ball was great. I could be way off on my perception of the ball, but I think the current PRO V1X spins more then the test ball on full short iron shots and wedge shots, and that is an element that I really like. A ball that spins less on full iron and wedge shots would not be appealing to me. Also, a ball that doesn't check up on agressive knock down wedge chips does not appeal to me either. I feel I have more control with more spin. I do think that the TEST BALL was better off the driver. Its reduced spin increased distance slightly and helped it stay on line better. It seemed to have the cover consistency of the current PRO V1. I would say it was kinda like a the core of a PRO V1X with the cover of a PRO V1.

Thank you to Titleist for the opportunity to test the new ProV1x.  I found the ball to have a very flat / low spin flight off the driver.  It didn't curve very much at all.  On all my irons it seemed to lauch higher than the current Prov1x.  The prototype also didn't spin as much but did have a much softer feel.  Where this ball stood out to me was from 75 yards and in and around the greens.  I love the feel of the prototype on the short shots.  It has a soft feel with just a limited amount of spin.  I also liked how the ball felt off the putter face.  I can't believe they can make a ball that feels this soft but doesn't spin.

My chief complaint continues to be the durability of the cover.  This prototype scuffed but didn't tear like the current prov1x.  I could still play the protoype after the scuff but I think this is something Titleist should look into.

Overall I really like the ball.  I still think the 2009 edition has been my favorite but this could take it's place.

i am a +1 handicap player and currently play the pro V1x ball and after today playing 18 holes i played 9 holes choosing differant shots to test the new ball out with. i also played 9 holes playing both the pro V1x and the test ball every hole taking score with each ball.

distance:

driver, test ball was about 10 yards longer and seemed to be a little straighter than the pro V1x and a slightly lower ball flight.

fairwaywoods and long irons, the test ball was about 2-3 yards longer do to spinning less than the pro V1x

short irons and wedges, also a few feet longer do to less spin.

spin: the test ball seemed to be a slightly lower ball flight and less spin the pro V1x spins on average 4-6 feet depending on slope and or distance the test ball spins on average 0-3 feet depending on slope and distance.

short game: i really liked the softer feel and the roll off the putter. it was very cool having a ball that was soft around the greens and solid off the driver the spin i would need to get used to but it isnt that much off a change

score vs par:

par is 36 

test ball 33 i hit 6 of 7 fairways and the one missed i rolled off the back of a par4 green the ball performed very well

my biggest flaw in my game is leaving my wedge shots just short of the flag with the test ball i was getting them to the hole and slightly past the flag so that might have been a reason i was a few strokes better than the pro V1x i hit alot of wedges into greens because of my length off the tee

pro V1x 35 i hit 5 of 7 fairways and was just to the right of the par4 i was over witht the test ball

i do like the test ball off the putter just a little more for faster greens i think i would like the proV1x better on slower greens.

overall i really liked the test ball and being a blade player i really liked the feel of the test ball great ball thanks titleist 

I've played 3 rounds with the test balls now.  The only major and consistent distance seems to be in full iron shots.  8i through 4i it seems like I am about 5 yards longer with the test ball.  Feels a little softer off the clubface on those full shots also.  Spin and feel around the greens is very similar to the 2010 Pro V1.  Didn't notice a huge difference in driver distance but I have been tinkering with drivers lately and it's hard to judge for sure.  Pretty awesome getting to participate in this.  Thanks TT.

Unexpected Results.

I got my sleeve of test balls last night so I was out at the course today to try them out.  I played two balls and was focusing on making a good swing on both of them.  So I changed my preshot routine just a little.  The results of both balls was about the same but the astonishing thing is that I shot a 69 with both balls, although I did not birdie the same holes.  The ball flight between the two is different but the distance was very simular.  Most of the time there was very little true difference in the distance of the balls.  But the new ball held its line better in the wind but the ProV1 was easier to shape into or with the wind.  There was never 10 yards difference in the distance from the hole.  Often the balls would be with in five feet of each other.  I did like the flight of the new ball but thought it was closer to a Pro V1x.  The unexpected results was simply by focusing on the swing, or roll of the ball on the putt, my score dropped drastically.  I usually shoot 78 - 82.  And this last weekend I shot 80 and 81.  Today, the wind was 20 - 25 mph.  I was not expecting to have a good score. 

The moral of the story has nothing to do with the new ball, but to focus on the swing.  The greatest equipment will not make up for a flawed swing.  I did not have one bad swing all day.  I had some that were not the best but even then they left me with a playable next shot.

As far as the ball I tested, there were two times I thought it should have checked up and did not but the new ball seemed to putt better.  I never would have thought it made any difference on putts but this ball seemed to roll smoother and hold its line better and just feel better putting.  That alone is enough difference to make a change.  The other differences are marginal at best.  But this was just one time.  Next time I will play just one ball and see how it goes.

Day 2 of testing.

Love/Hate Relationship.

    Played 27 holes yesterday with the same ball.  (18 the day before) So the durability was there.  I loved this ball on a par 5 where I hit a driver off the deck for my second shot and it stopped some 243 yards away up hill 8 feet from the hole.  Made the first of two eagles.  I loved this ball when I holed out from 151 yards away on a par 4.  I hated it when I needed to have it stop with the partial shots.

    On the two days of testing I played very well and stayed out of trouble both days.  It was very windy the first day but much nicer the next.  I could tell that this ball traveled further and was much straighter.  However, there were a few times I needed the ball to check up and it did not.  I thought at first I was just not making good contact and it was from playing an unfamiliar ball.  After I completed the round I played 9 more and this time I intentionally played partial shots. Trying to work the ball high and low and all over.  I would hit the same shot with the Pro V.  I was closer to the hole every time with the Pro V. 

    One of my favorite shots is the one hop and stop.  I carry four wedges and four swings and two set ups for distance control.  So I have a swing that will get me with in two yards of the flag, provided that I get the distance right (often paced off or with Sky Caddie.)  I am very good at this from 25 to 85 yards and almost always stop the ball within 10 feet of the hole and often with in 3.  I love the look on my opponents face when the ball comes screaming in and then hits the breaks.  This ball would come in take a big hop and start to roll another 10 to 15 feet.  This coupled with it tendency to travel further anyway left much longer putts.  I found that with the Pro V, I had a 5 - 10 ft putt and a 20 -25 ft putt.  This ball putted much better than the Pro V so it made up for it a little bit.  I was amazed several times that a 20 footer tracked to the hole and fell in.  BUT I do not make many 20 foot putts.  I am happy to make a 10.  Putting is my down fall and like I stated earlier this ball putts great.   But I was left with a few 30 and 40 footers.

   Bottom line, I hope this was not the new Pro V that I was sent.  Because if it was then I may have to switch balls.  10 yards in the fairway make no real difference to me.  10 yards on the green is one stroke at least.  This ball was very simular to another ball that I have played with in the past.  But not as good on partial shots.  The Pro V1 is not as long, and does not putt as well but on the fast sloped greens at my home course stopping the ball is more important that anything else.  Downhill chips meant a long uphill putt on the next shot.

Started testing the new Pro V1x after receiving my sleeve.  Played 8 holes side by side with present Pro V1x.  My first impressions are that the new ball spins much more. The ball flight off my 909 D3 8.5 degree driver (Stock voodoo Stiff shaft) was much higher. Actually, ball tended to balloon and I lost 10 or so yards.  While working ball left/right - the new ball spun much more, drawing/fading significantly more.  With irons from 120-180 yards, the flights seemed similiar, no real discernable distance or trajectory difference.  On full 50 degree wedges - (Volkey 250-08) which I tend to spin,  the new ball was uncontrollable backing up 30-40 feet.   Greenside shots - bunkers / chips / pitches - the new ball ran out more than the present Pro V1x - which seemed a little inconsistent since the spin seemed higher with other clubs.

No real difference between the two while putting,  however the new ball felt a bit harder than the present version and the sound was a bit louder.

Will play 18 holes this weekend and get a better read.

Found the test ball to be 10 yds longer off the tee, 902d. vs my other ball. seemed to be harder but it reacted fine with wedges around the green. i would love to have more. thank you.

I'm with you Bill; I noticed little difference.  My Pro V 1 was longer off the tee but other shots were nearly the same.

I have played 3 rounds with the test balls.  I like the feel of the ball exploding off of the driver.  Getting 10 to 15 yards more off of the driver.  The ball seems slightly harder than the Pro V1 that I use.  Mid irons 6 to 10 yards more with the test balls.  Not much difference in the short irons.  Test balls do not spin on the green as well as the Pro V1, .  Love this ball.  Can I buy more of the test balls? 

Rob, what was the time frame between the "You have been selected and in the mail" email and when you received them?  Got the email 10/1 and hope to test them on the 16th.

That's what I want to know. I got the email on 10/1 and have yet to receive them. I'm really looking forward to playing them. 

Well I received my sleeve of three test balls today 10-9-10 and I received the email on the 1st that I was selected. I will be playing tomorrow here in the Philly area and the weather looks great for this time of the year. I can't wait to see how they compare to my Pro V1X that I'm currently using. Don't know where you are located but Fairhaven, Ma. is only a few states from Phila, Pa. and you can use that as a guage as to how long it takes for the balls to get to you Logan P. Hope that helps!

The prototype did not stop on the green as fast as the NXT Tour or a Pro Vx, but it was much further off the tee and in the long irons.  It really shined putting, great feel.  I will take the run out on the green for the better feel on the putts, and the added distance off the tee is a bonus.

That was what I put on my survey, this ball was really flying on the tee.  Long and straight, same with my long irons and hybrid.  This ball is a winner.  I did my test at Hell's Point in Virginia Beach this past Sat.  Great day, Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the test panel.

I recieved your 3 test balls and played them along side another titleist ball plus a competiters ball. I found that this test ball gave me longer length both off the tee and the fairway. It was also very durable. I didn't get the land on the greens stop and spin as each time the ball released. The greens were very hard but the NXT titleist ball held the greens better. Do you really want a comparison of the ball I play most often?

Most often I play another ball, which is IMO the best of the cheapies, $13/ 15 pack. I play a lot and on a course where a not so good tee shot is a lost ball, and this time of year a good tee shot can become a lost ball. I can't afford $4-5 a ball all the time.

I did testing to current ProV1, my ball of choice, starting with practice green, then fairway to green, then 2 rounds front ProV back test ball, front test ball, back ProV.

Putting I could not feel a difference, however the ball seemed to go in the hole at a slightly higher velocity, instead of dropping in the front of the hole it hit the back of the hole.

Pitching/chipping test ball clearly has less spin.

4i-PW full swing distance was the same, current ProV1 consistently stopped closer to pitch mark(when I hit the green).

503.h 19*, 22*, and 904f 17* test ball was definitely longer.

904f 15* test ball was longer off the tee, shorter off the ground.

Driver 983K 8.5*, test ball was, if anything, slightly shorter.  Impact didn't feel quite right.

I would not take this ball over the current ProV1.

The only thing I care about in ball performance is stopping power on the green.  The previous ProV1x was the best until I tried a current ProV1.

So I can fill out the survey in comparison to ProV1 or test again in comparison to my other ball, whichever you want.

I have just finished playing  a few rounds with the new ball, And I can honestly say dont feel bad about not getting picked.

Although I was glad and feel somewhat honored to have tested it, It is not a Magic Ball.  It would be a great replacement to either or both of the ProV1 balls (I wish they would make just one and lower the cost) as it seemed to fall in between both of them.

As far as distance off the tee no 15 to 25 yard gains or more.Short to Mid Iron Approach shots are going to react about the same as they always do, Some bite some do not some spin more than others.

Putting felt just about like the ProV1x.  You would have to hit at least 20 to 30 balls or more on short chips with 2 different balls at the same time to even see any comparison between 2 golf balls, Some are going to bite and some are going to back up and some will skip forward. There are to many variables, You would have to be a Machine or hit off one to tell the difference between the other ProV's.

To make a long story even longer, It would be awesome for Titleist to Replace the two versions of the ProV with the new ball and lower the cost a few dollars. I hope they don't come out with a third option in the ProV line.
