Now don't get me wrong, I love that brands throughout golf are fitting golf balls. And the fact that such a big brand like Titleist is pushing this so hard is great. But how can the perfect ball for everyone, be satisfied by a selection from just two? I refuse to believe that the technology is not there so that a manufacture could not produce twenty slightly different lets say... ProV1's? Now I am no expert on golf ball manufacturing nor will I ever be, but it just seems that someone should step up to the plate and produce a true custom-fit golf ball.

    Titleist?

Just one avid golfers thoughts. What do you think?

they make about 10 different balls

what are you looking for that you can't get?

I'll venture to guess the differences would be so small that the amateur playing public couldn't tell the difference between them. On the other hand, a difference between a Pro V1, a V1X, an NXT Tour and others can be felt by a much wider variety of players. If the feel and results aren't apparent, the only reason any of us would buy Pro V1 balls is because the PGA Tour player we like plays them.

Personally, I prefer the NXT Tour and only wish they made it in optic yellow.

Excuse me but Titleist makes 6 other types of golf balls beside the ProV and ProVx.

The manufacturing cost would be so great that a sleeve would cost $25 not to mention the problems the retailers and green grass accounts would have stocking all the variations.   Larogs

Obviously there are more than 2 balls that are out there. To the extreme, what should a female golfer use if she needs great touch around the green? Yes she could use a ProV1, but is that ball optimized for her swing speed? She will be giving up something since the average swing speed of a female is lower, right? If it is noticeable for the extreme it could be worth wile for all the rest of us. Now we get custom fit clubs right down to grip size, lie, and a piece of lead tape, certainly a better fitting ball could be beneficial.

If you and I have a 5-30y shot, our clubheads should be moving at the same speed. For short game there should be no difference in the performance of the ball because you are female.

A slower swing speed has disadvantages with any ball made.

A lower compression ball (DT So/Lo) will increase distance, but you will lose greenside control.

I doubt it is possible to make a ball that maximizes slow swing distance, maintains excellent greenside control, and passes USGA testing. Don't forget the USGA.

Again I am no expert on golf ball physics but if a golf ball with a lower compression will increase her distance off the tee, why could they not put a better cover or layer in it to get the green side performance? And are you talking of the test they do to see how hot golf balls are? The balls that don't pass that are ones that fly to far, but again if it was optimized for a women's swing speed it would probably fall short due to over compression on their mechanical golfer.

There are more tests than just the distance, and of course we as golfers aren't allowed to know the ball standards anymore, you must be a ball manufacturer to get the golf ball rules from the USGA.

There are spin limits when the ball is hit by a specific object moving at a specific speed, this I know from before the rules became secret.

Good point Quintin, did not think of that. Sounds like a great challenge, but I still feel its possible and will be done one day.

Could not agree more !!! The best name in golf can't offer more than two premium balls ?! Everybody feels a different stirke on the ball. My friend is a 4 hdcp golfer, he smashes the ball. I'm a 5 hdcp, I swing smooth and easy. I'll hand him a ball that I think feels hard, he plays one hole with it, and says its soft to him. Go figure ? To me the 2011 ProV1x, harder cover than the last, more spin to my ball strike, very disappointing. So much so, I haven't even tried the 2011 ProV1s. Because I couldn't take getting disappointed in my favorite golf manufacturer twice. For the record , I play the Pentas- if Titleist can come close to this feel, I'll make the switch back. The pentas could be a fraction harder on the cover, just a little less than a ProV1x, and that'll be my ideal golf ball.

    Mike,

I am sorry to hear your disappointment int he new 2011 Pro V1's and Pro V1x.  To be 100% truthful, the urethane cover and urethane density on the 2011 models are the exact same as the 2009 Pro V1's and Pro V1x's.  The new Pro V1's spin a little more than the previous generation, and the Pro V1x's spin a little less than the previous model.

Could the firmer feel you are experiencing be the result of new irons, wedges, woods, shafts, etc.?
