I am a senior golfer with a slow swing speed. My best drives may go 195 yards.

My current driver is: Model: Titleist 917 D3 Loft: 9.5 deg. Hosel: D3 Setting Surefit CG: Standard Draw Weight Shaft: Diamana 50, Lite

Currently, my drive trajectory is generally on the high side and would probably like to make it more piercing.

I would like to know which combination of driver head, shaft selection, and adjustments are good starting points for determining my next driver in addition to getting fitted. Any suggestions?

We will just be guessing compared to what the real data will tell you during your fitting. The basic answer would be slow swingers benefit from the light weight TSR1 but the trajectory is higher with less role so a TSR2, 3, or 4 with a soft shaft might give you the piercing flight but still enough distance. Good luck with the fitting and be willing to try multiple combinations for the best results.

Am senior as well, will be 77 in September. I have that same driver but in a 10.5* with a Fujikura Speeder Pro 64 S Shaft. Can still hit it in the 220 range. Picked up the TSI3 10.0 set at 10.75 with a Fujikura Speeder TR 661 S shaft and can get it regularly 220-250. surprise myself when I catch it and it can go 265. My coach has been very encouraging. Have been also working with a physical therapist and working out at the senior center twice a week, core development. Takes a team. Also the most important thing is a good fitter. That is where I would send you. They are the experts and each of us is different. They can put you in the right combination thru a session of trial and error. I always go for a fitting each time a new club comes out. I went to check out two latest drivers and they dust did not work for me and we stuck with the TSI. That is why a fitter is the key.

    SDL,

Have a look at the TSR1. I think it's slightly lighter and has options for lighter weight, higher launching shafts that might be able to create more ball speed for you. I'd start there in your fitting.

You have to try the TSR2 in 11 loft. The choice of shaft is something you have to see at a fitting.

A qualified Titleist fitter will take the time to interview you for current game and then go through head and shaft selection to find your ideal launch and carry.

You can also look at your ball in the near term. Pro-V1 through Pro-V1 to AVX have deceasing launch characteristics

At 73, it isn’t always the club causing a loss of distance. Besides the best club for you, a TPI physical evaluation with recommended stretches and exercises can also bring back some distance. Even a TSi-1 with a 40 g shaft didn’t get me over 185. With conditioning, fitting, and a pro review of swing, I am usually over yards.

It’s been 6-7 years since the 917 came out. We can hardly make a recommendation on what you were fit for then. Downside to living longer.

    Hey SDL
Nothing wrong with wondering what your best options are. We all do it.
Yes a lighter shaft and flex will generally lead to higher launch angle and backspin, but there are several factors to consider if you want to bring that down a bit or get more roll-out.
There are too many combinations of clubhead, sure fit setting, shaft weight, flex, and length for a guy to think about. You stated you're going to a fitter, so let him make the final suggestions. You should review with him what you are looking for from your driver before you start. Most people think only of distance, but talk to him about launch angle, dispersion, roll out, etc. and see what combination fits your needs. Think about where you want to hit your next shot from (best advice I ever received), and work backwards from there.
Best answer is see a fitter, but make sure they are a true qualified fitter. Titleist has a bunch of them so maybe ask around your area or contact Titleist to see who is available.
    Good luck and keep swinging.

I replaced my 917 D3 last fall. I went into the fitting thinking that the TSR3 was the club I wanted. But my Titleist fitter had me try the whole family of TSR drivers, multiple lofts, shafts and flexes. In the end, I walked away with the TSR2. And I’m still amazed by how well this driver works for me.

    Trust your fitter!

Others have mentioned the fitting and that's the best assured way to find what works for you.

That said, I'll share my experience with a Titleist fitter just a month or two ago. I have a slow swing speed, 82 to 83 mph now days. So I had the TSR1 in the lightweight Ascent shaft that was stock. When the fitter was at my course I had him look at the flight and see what he thought. He said the light shaft was not doing me any favors as I was spinning it too much, due to the soft tip.

He had me hit the Tensei Blue and I happened to have a Graphite Design DI5 in my office with a Titleist tip. I hit both those and they were pretty similar in reducing the spin. So I kept the GD in there and have been loving the results on course.

So moral of the story, is lightweight for a slow swing speed isn't always the perfect solution.

this is a very tough one to iron out on the internet. typically lower speed players struggle with launch, but you are suggesting that your launch is on the high side.

here's essentially what it boils down to, and it might not be a convenient thing to do, but it's your striking.

if you are a lower speed player who hits its pure as butter, you can probably find some pretty major gains with equipment.

if you are a lower speed player who struggles a bit with striking, you are going to have to play a game of concessions.

ultimately some time with an expert in a fitting bay will reveal how much you're leaving on the table, it could be a lot, or it could be very little, and that's something we can't really speculate about.
  11. I have played the 917 D3 driver since it first came out. I have the 8.5 degree head. I started out with the aldila 65 green shaft regular flex. Last year I switched to the aldilia 45 orange in senior flex. I am 75, a 10 handicap and my average driving distance is 211. I have tried other drivers, most recently the tsi1 and the png 425 g max, but I keep coming back to the D3. It is not the longest driver, but for me it is the most accurate. Also, with the small head, it is easier to hit off the turf.
