Gloves and grip pressure

I just burned through another glove. I posted a while back that I have arthritis and use 2 gloves to help with my grip. However, I go through gloves too quickly so I'm wondering how long your glove(s) last?

I've been using the FJ WeatherSof gloves and love the feel. I just replaced them with new Exo4's though due to a huge hole in the left thumb.

I tend to blow a hole in the left thumb and lower palm areas the most often. Probably 90% of the time. Could this be a grip pressure use? Am I gripping tighter than I think? Too loose?

I've attached a pic to better display the hole. Thanks everyone.

  2. I had this problem (especially in the palm) because my grips were undersized for my hands. I'm 6'2" 220 pounds and swinging something with a stock or midsize grip is like grasping a twig. I went with a Golf Pride CP2 jumbo grip with normal wrapping and that problem has gone away. It prevents you from going with a super Kung Fu grip and I have found I am swinging easier and letting the club do the work not the other way around.

I agree here. Changing to a larger grip helps and your hands will thank you.

I have roughly 6 gloves in my bag that I rotate every round (or more frequently if they get wet due to weather/sweat). All are Titleist Players gloves. Judging by the photo, it looks like you keep the club pretty heavy in your palm with a ton of thumb pressure. I had the same problem. What I did to fix this issue was I bought a jumbo bag at the range, took out my 52º and hit the whole bag concentrating on minimal club pressure by gripping with my middle and ring fingers just below the first knuckle. Feels pretty weird at first and I thought for sure I was going to let go of the club (never happened). Maybe if you take this idea and tweak it a little to suit you, you may find yourself stretching the life of your gloves out a little further.

    DH,

A number of factors enter into how long a glove will last so there is no easy answer to your question. Generally speaking I have found synthetic materials to last longer than cabretta leathers. In fact, I personally have stopped using cabretta for this reason and also that they are more expensive too. Your grip pressure is definitely a factor, how often you use you glove (ie, how many swings), how clean do you keep the gloves, and more importantly the type of grip you use is a huge factor. Cord type grips will chew through gloves very quickly. Synthetic grips will help slow down wear somewhat. So, ultimately it is a combination of all these factors that have an effect. By-the-way, did you know that when TW was playing, he would replace his gloves every 3 holes!

    Best Wishes,

I've worked with some very good coaches/teaching professionals and players over the years and I have always been taught that the types of wear that you are getting would most likely be a result of poor grip and grip pressure. Of course, if your grips are the wrong size, then that could also be an influencing factor.

The best instruction that I have received over the years has been to use the grip that has been set out by Ben Hogan in his Five Lessons - Modern Fundamentals of Golf. You may use a slightly stronger grip (ie: left hand position) but the club grip should sit in the hands in a similar manner as illustrated in the book.

I am not sure however the effect that your arthritis may have on your hand/finger strength, etc. so it could be a factor as well. I do find though that with the reinforcement of the proper grip/hand pressure, I find that my gloves last significantly longer -- in fact my gloves wear out from stretching rather than from wear holes/patterns like that shown in your photo.

I use either the Titleist Players Gloves or the FJ Sta Soft ...with the Titleist being my preferred choice. I hope there is some value in this for you DHall!

Looks like you are regripping. During your swing.

What do you mean by regripping?

Thank you all for your thoughts. Much appreciated.

Ultimately, gloves are meant to be worn through. If you didn't wear gloves, your hands would be the surface that would be worn and ultimately develop callouses to protect against that. I've seen some people above recommend rotating gloves and that works wonders for me. I rotate two gloves a round and when they get worn out, they turn into my range gloves. I use the Titleist Players Flex which seem much more durable than the weathersof's.

As for the regripping note Todd passed along - during your swing, the club is moving in your hands (much more common on the lower hand than the upper) and that is causing more wear and tear on the fabric.

Hopefully all this info helps your gloves and your game.

I average 30-40 rounds out of my StaSof's.

Up until about 5 years ago, I used to wear a hole in the palm. The only thing I have done is switched from full to semi corded grips.

Another factor are the grips you use. Corded grips always wrecked havoc on my gloves.
