I played the Quail Village Golf Course in Naples yesterday with three Rotarian friends of mine.
After a disappointing triple bogie on hole #1 I hoped to score better on hole #2. I had played the course various times last year and this year and knew it well. Hole #2 is a tricky par 3: short, but pond to the right and to the left all along the fairway with another pond waiting greedily behind the green. Also, the fairway to the green is sort of crooked and a direct shot for the pin would have to cross water at a certain point. Not an easy hole. It's the kind of hole, where you want your tee shot to go straight, high up and drop dead on the green in order to sink the ball with one or two putts.
My friend took out a range finder, measured the distance and told the rest of the group the flag was positioned at 85 yards from the tee box. So, I took my titleist sandwedge and a titleist #3 ball, teed it up low and swung away. Striking the ball I had this feeling immediately that I had found the sweet spot of the clubface. With the ball airborne my friends already congratulated me on the good strike. The ball then dropped app. 2 feet in front and a little left of the pin, bounced once, rolled to the back of the cap hit it and hopped back into the hole. I took off my sunglasses and my cap and threw both items on the ground in disbelief. The cheering and hugging from my friends did not seem to end and upon return to the clubhouse after we finished our round I told everyone that drinks were on me.
In my 23 years of playing golf this has never happened to me or to anyone playing with me before.
I will honor this titleist ball, which will never be hit by a golf club again, and my titleist sandwedge until the end of my life.
