Hi everyone, So I decided to finally replace the grip on my 04 Futura Putter with a nice new bright red Scotty Matador Large. A couple questions. Number 1, is there any reason I couldn't do this myself, I've been doing the rest of my bag with the "tapeless grips" for years. Number 2, when going from the standard grip to the larger grip what type of benefits or drawbacks have you noticed? Thanks everyone.

I just switched from from the standard Pistolini grip on my Newport 2 to a Matador mid-size and am now making many more short putts. Really helped stabilize hands. Now it is just back, through and in.
  3. From a technical viewpoint you should consider the weight of each of the grips...the less weight increases the swingweight of your putter and vice versa.

So by adding a larger putter grip it will essentially change the swing-weight and in essence the performance of the putter? So should I just replace it with the same, OEM grip or will someone at Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy know how to compensate for the added weight? Sorry if I'm making this more difficult than it has to be, I don't want to change the club specs for the sake of experimenting with the larger putter grip. Thanks.

You can send it back to Scotty Cameron and have them do the installation and request the specs as you would like them. I have done this with a couple of my Newport 2 putters (actually waiting on one to be returned on Tuesday that was adjusted ...loft/lie... new Matador Large grip installed and top line added).

I would suggest experimenting with the grips to find what you like. My gamer (Select Newport 2) is the one on its way back from Scotty Cameron's Custom Shop and it has the Matador Large grip (had a red one but changed to black). My backup putter (Studio Style Newport 2) I had a GolfPride TOUR SNSR™ CONTOUR installed and I immediately noticed the difference in the weight change. I definitely prefer the Matador Large!!!

I just got my putter back from the Scotty Cameron Custom Shop...this was my second time sending a SC putter to the custom shop and (just like the last) another happy customer!!!!!

Your Futura likely has a studio design grip which weighs about 60g, the Matador is close to 80g. The heaver grip will decrease the swing weight of the futura....make the head fill lighter.

If you want to try a larger grip and maintain the same swingweight you might consider a Super Stroke as these are available in 60g weight

Wait, is that legal? Recommending a non Titleist grip? Lol thanks for the suggestion, I have to be honest my OCD won't allow me to use another brand grip. I did install the Matador large and it's been great. Very comfortable, solid feel. Highly recommended.

  10. I personally prefer larger grips. You should be able to do it at home all you need is some grip tape and solvent such as mineral spirits or lighter fluid and you just slide the grip right on
