As the days get shorter and opportunities to play become fewer, I’ve been reviewing my game this past year. While lack of rounds and practice time was the biggest bane to my game this year, my putting was hands down my weakest link.

I’ve just returned from a four day weekend in Myrtle Beach, where I struck the ball as well as I have all season, only to be let down by my putting. One round in particular, I hit 15 greens in regulation, with maybe 10 legitimate birdie chances. While I won’t complain about the 3 I converted, I did have 3 three-putts. This is the story of my game in 2018.

I’ve had many putters over the years, and while I won my club championship using a California Fastback, I feel most comfortable putting with mallets. In the past, whenever I’ve shopped/bought a putter, it’s been after demoing a few in some showroom and selecting what I thought felt good and rolled well. But I’ve never had someone evaluate my putting stroke to at least point me in the right direction.

I totally understand and accept the Indian not the arrow argument, but I’d like to know how the TT community selects their putters. FWIW, my miss is typically leaving the ball short. I’m thinking a heavier putter may be on the horizon, but just not sure which one.

For me I’ve had as of yesterday. Now my 4th Scotty. All previous 3 have gone onto better homes......I digress
I just found a Scotty studio stainless Newport Beach. About 8.5/10 Condition. Newer pistolini grip 34”

For me it’s about rolling it and getting a good feel for it before buying. Make sure you have the right length. Can always extend or shorten just make sure you get the swing weight right. Or like me just go with it. Never buy without trying
Be open minded and go with what feels right in your hands. You’ll know when you have it in your hands and swipe that visa quick like your stealing it and go play!

I've stuck with my old SC Futura Phantom. Every season I try a few newer Camerons that would upgrade my bag, but the Futura Phantom gives me the best results every time. I use my "Dollar Method" to test my putters. I'll place four quarters 10 feet apart out to 40 feet on a putting green and putt 4 balls, one to each quarter. I'll repeat the same from the fringe also. The FP has won hands down for distance control and accuracy.
  4. Practice makes perfect and putting is 95% positive mental attitude and concentration

Go for a putter that feels good and gives you confidence

    Its a personal thing IMO

    Best of Luck
  5. I’ve always had blade putters, but was struggling early in the summer. Finally broke the bank and went for a putter fitting. Learned a lot about my stroke and ended up with a Scotty Futura 5.5M mallet. Took some adjusting to it, but am more confident in my putting now. This was also my 1st Scotty and wanted to do it right.

Putting strokes account for 30-45% of your score. My fitter/coach also has a Science And Motion (SAM) setup for putter fittings and stroke analysis. I was using a LH mallet, face balanced, and I'm left eye dominant. I was struggling with both pushes and pulls. The analysis showed I have an arc and a mid-hang face is better suited to my stroke. The only SC LH not face balanced at the time was a Newport-2. I do prefer a wider base to be able to line up a putt. My LH and RH strokes are near identical, so I ended up with my dominant eye forward with a RH Cameron & Crown Mallet. I can now hit my lines, if I could only read a green...I could sink more.
  7. I have 6 Cameron putters, but I am loyal to only one of them that makes it into my bag. The other 5 lean against the wall in our front room which has a goldf theme. I bought the first one just because I could. Then I added a Red X that a friend wanted to sell (have never used it on the course). Next came a miz Scotty Cameron, just to add to the collection. Finally I put some time into a selection and bought a Newport 2 Notchback. After several months I realized I kept missing the same putts over and over. I then went to a fitting with a certified Titleist fitter. We spent time on what appealed to my eye. He then factored on my stroke. I am now the proud owner of a Newport 3 and have been draining more putts than ever. There is nothing better than standing over a putt and knowing you have given yourself the best chance to make it with the putter in your hand.

The sixth one? I won it at a recent golf tournament in a raffle. I don’t really have a use for it and thought about trading it in at PGA for something else, but my wife said I should just add it to the collection. She said if I wanted something else, I should just buy it. Yep.....I married a good one!

I go by look and feel. After all, it is the art of putting.

I bought the futura X5 after being fitting for it,
because it looked nice and different from majority of all the other putters out there.
Then the X7 came out slightly bigger brother, will that went straight into the bag haha
Now the concept cx-01 is out,
I’m in two minds to buy one.

During my 'education' at a recent fitting.

Fitter said I should have some more toe flow, so have opted for a Futura 5.5. Still waiting for it to be delivered.

I have a custom fit Edel that I should use more often...but it is on the naughty step at the moment
  13. I have always gone with a blade. I was using the Newport 1.5 or 2.5, until the Cameron and Crown came along, and now I am a Newport 2 guy. I putt by feel, and I have changed putters as Scotty has changed the face on the putters to add more feel.
The key to being a good putter is confidence, practise and feel. Everything starts with practise and good technique, but feel is something you have to acquire, and confidence is a function of everything.

I just got my 7th SC putter and funny thing is, i play with my first- a Bullseye Flange. It's soft, simple and it works for me. The others are for display and mostly in very good condition. Pick a putter that you're confident in and you'll make more putts.

First look, second feel, thrird results.
For me the perfect putter should satisfied to the 3 points.
Often the look is there but not the results.

Just got my first Scotty Cameron after a fitting at the celtic manor with Tim, tried a few different ones but as soon I picked up the futura 5s it just felt so much easier to line up with the centre shaft, a great session my first fitting with some great tips on posture and alignment from Tim, will definitely go for a fitting in the spring when I change my old driver 910 D3

I went to the pga store and golf galaxy and tried every Scotty I could get my hands on. I really thought I would like the mallet putters like the Futura 6M or 7M. But it was like there was to much going on while looking down at them. I finally decided on the Futura 5CB and I’m super happy with my purchase. I took it out on the course the next day and hit the putting green before I went out and I was on fire. I felt the confidence right away with this putter and it carried over to the course also. I hope it carries over into the season this year. I’m super excited about getting out there and working to get better.
  18. The older I get the more trouble I have with my distance control and backstroke being a little erratic. I tried the Newport's and several other brands. The final factor for me was the overall weight and alignment markings on the putter head. The weight helped with distance control and my erratic backstroke. The alignment marks help me focus more on my backstroke and follow through. I final settled on the Scotty Cameron Future 5W with a Scotty Cameron Studio Design aftermarket grip. This has really helped my strokes per round. The larger grip keeps my wrists out of the stroke more. Hope this helps!
  19. I found the heavier the putter, the more I would leave it short. When I asked my pro about this, he said it was a well worn path of golfers buying a heavier putter, then returning it after finding out they lost distance control.

  20. I went by feel on my first Scotty, I'm hoping to get a fitting done this year to upgrade my current putter and maybe help my putting feel and consistency.
  21. Great info fellas. I too am now looking for a new flat stick and keep fighting the urge to get a true fitting. I've spent a couple hours on the PGA/Golf Galaxy green, but know there is still more to it, to help me get that last little edge. Right now I'm looking at a Newport 2 notch back, a Newport 2.5, and a Futura 5w. I know look is usually the first thought, but I want to get into the 60s this year, so I am all for function over form at this point.
  22. I chose the Newport 2 select because I like the more traditional look and it's as if it lines itself up behind the ball. You can't go wrong with an SC!
  23. I'm not sure I really have decided.... :D

Always loved the blade look and black is my favorite color, so I guess I lucked out! Getting fit at the Gallery was a bonus as it confirmed this was the right model.
