At home putting. What surface do you use?

  1. Hi team, I recently decided to make my own stimp meter and find a bunch of different carpets to practice on. Not looking to spend a whole bunch of money. I just want to practice my pace on different stimp rated surfaces. What do you use at home? What kind of carpet have you found to be the most realistic? I know I can buy custom greens but I don't feel like spending $2200 for a 10x10ft surface. (I'd rather get some new irons, driver, Scotty putter....etc.) so I'd be very interested in hearing what all of you like to practice on and why. Thanks so much for your responses. I look forward to reading them!

I use a putting carpet with an automatic ball return that comes all together in a kit. Can be bought at most sporting goods and golf stores. The length is 9 feet. The carpet surface is very close to most golf courses that have bent grass or champions Bermuda greens. Cost less than $50.
  3. I use and have some of their products. I use the putting mats and have used their practice balls for a while. These are very decent mats and i have had mine for 2 years. Might look into them if you haven't already.

    Ben,

    www.golfdigest.com/.../ben-crane-touts-toyota-camry-trunk-carpet-as-the-best-indoor-putting-surface-seriously

According to this article a couple years ago, Ben Crane and Webb Simpson believe the most realistic indoor putting surface is the trunk carpet of a Toyota Camry! I'm not sure if you want to invest that type of time, money or energy to create a practice green with that surface but I'll take their word for it still.

Carpets are okay and I've used them for years before. But I now use a birdieball putting surface- going on my 5th year now, the 15 footer has been a somewhat permanent fixture in the TV room, it has generally the same speed at my club. For $164, it's been one of the best investments I've made.

I use a 15' piece of marine carpet that I bought at Home Depot ( $50). Speed is pretty good, but I primarily use it in the winter when I can't practice outside.

I use a Big Moss---purchased via their eBay store. This rolls great and are priced by size/holes.
  9. Last year I purchased the Little Murph putting green from Truline putting greens. It is a 10 foot green that runs a 10 on the stimpmeter. It was 330 dollars and is very easy to use and rolls great. They also have a 12 footer for around 400 dollars that rolls a 12 on the stimpmeter. These greens are used in golf shops and by college golf teams.

you can get carpet from Home Depot and use different padding thickness underneath to make it slower, with no padding underneath for faster...if you get real creative you can carve padding and make it ungulate. Just an idea my father and i mess around with during harsh New England winters.

I use a Dave Pelz truth board. Grooves a perfectly straight three-foot putt.

Camry trunk carpet is really, really good, too.

I have hardwood floors for that super slick 100 on the stimp meter! Aside from that I have the truck carpet from a Camry which I got from a friend that works at an auto body shop. :D

I am fortunate living in a climate that affords us good weather 12 months a year. I just go to the range and putting green to practice.

Well I used my carpet. I focus on my alignment and how the ball rolls away from my putt. Quick and easy. I try to putt every day, at least a little bit.
  15. Hey Team! Thank you so much for all of your responses. I recently went to a discount carpet warehouse. Got them to do some serious lifting for me so that I could test and get the stimp reading on each of the ones that I chose. Needless to say, they thought I was totally crazy with my piece of moulding, golf balls, and measuring tape. After about an hour I found carpet that rates 8.5-9 against the grain, 9-9.5 with the grain almost 10.

Joshua B, I'm going to go that next-next level and buy some padding to make undulations in the green. Is there a specific type of padding that you found the most useful? I'm a man used to the rigors of trial and error but if you have already had some time to test I would be grateful to learn from your trials so as to experience fewer errors haha. I also live in New England and it's right about now that my golf itch becomes the worst.

In a couple of years I hope to get an official green from a place like birdieball. But for now this will have to do. And it's not that bad at all.

    Thanks again,

    Ben

    That’s a beauty!
  18. Chris, that thing looks amazing. I was just checking it out online. I'd get it be I think that I might never be seen again after a certain direct family member finds out.... I'll put it on the list of things I need in the next 5-10 years and will probably add it to the purchase of my ball flight tracking system which I'm saving up for.
  19. I have been using camry carpet on my 12' by 9' homemade green for 3 years now. It's the best roll and easy to put down chalk lines or whatever you need to groove out your stroke before the spring season. I got that amount off eBay for less than $150. Here's the link to the same material : www.ebay.com/.../263962672689

I have the mat from Birdie Ball. It works well for me. Rolls true and you can adjust it to have breaks.

I have used a birdie ball for several years now. It's been a good pick up and was very reasonably priced.
  22. I use this putt out mat and pressure putt gizmo.

    The best investment ever.

I use a short nap indoor carpet runner with rubber backing. Bought a 36"x120" roll at Menard's several years ago for about $40. It rolls quick and true (no seams or creases.) You can get creative by placing 1/8" latex sheets under it to create breaks, but I just use it for alignment and stroke mechanics.
It works extremely well, and is cheap.
