  2. I agree John. I’m a fan too of best ball tournaments. Everyone contributes something especially if you have a good well rounded team.

I haven't played any kind of tournament in probably 5 years. I used to love scrambles.

Not a big tournament player, but I think that scrambles are the most fun. Not big pressure for higher handicaps and they always seem to contribute somewhere.

I like a new format we are doing here at a municipal course. 2 Man - 27 hole challenge. 1st 9 is combined score, 2nd 9 is 2 man best ball 3rd 9 is alternate shot. I think this format is awesome and they play them from the tips as well. (course is only 6200 from the tips) but the challenge is real to put up a good score..

I got away from 4 Man Best Ball as most around these parts are to raise money so you can buy mulligans and it takes 58 to win on a par 72 course. A legit (no mulligans) 65 and you go home without a kiss unless you fall into a different flight just right. Lol

I know some teams (of course once again for a good cause to raise money) have 20 mulligans, 5 per person and they are really good players anyway so for that reason I've been more selective on Best Ball events.

I play in a few tournaments every year but as I get older, they get less. Captains choice or scrambles, I stay away from. They are designed to speed up play but the do just the opposite. We use to have a team that played in scrambles and we were pretty good, normally shooting 22 to 24 under. We had a captain that could hit it around 300 yards and if his drive was in the middle, which it was most of the time, no one else would hit and we would move on. We had a pretty good team, but that was back in the late 90's.

I now have moved on to playing in Senior and Super Senior stroke play events. I love the thrill of stroke play. I also enjoy playing in four ball tournaments. If you get a compatible partner they can be most enjoyable. Match play is fun to play in if you are playing against opponents who have legitimate handicaps. I played in a match play tournament where I reached the finals and had to give my opponent 25 strokes because they had a 36 handicap and had blown everyone away thru their bracket. Toughest I match I ever had, I won on the 19th hole.

So now at 72 it's individual stroke play and four ball. I get to move up and have more fun.

I prefer flighted medal play tourn. everyone plays their own ball and you are playing against players of same abilities as yourself. No loaded teams no excessive use of mulligans. But when I play scrambles I prefer blind draw scrambles that way there's less chance of loaded teams.

Any scramble, it's more of a social event for me .

Agree with best ball. You try shots that you would never otherwise think of and it is really cool when they work out.
