As I'm fair skinned with a shaved head, sunscreen is my friend and a necessity. I prefer Neutrogena Cool DrySport SPF 70, works well for me. I just recently began using FJ Sun Sleeves and so far so good.

And for me, I use a Neutrogena spray on the backs of my hands - amazing how sunburned the back of my hands can be after a round if I forget to spray them.

Growing up, mom used to kick us out of the house: "Go outside and play!". With dad it was hunting and fishing. End of summer we went back to school bronzed. I've spent a lifetime outdoors working and playing.

Last week I was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, one spot on the nose, one on the lower back. MOHS surgeries scheduled for two weeks from now.

In the 60's - 70's no one wore sun screen. Even though I did the damage when I was a kid, I'm wearing sun screen now. Neutrogena 30 spf on regular days. I'll put on a heavier duty stuff when I know I'll be out on the water all day, or on a winter vacation in the Caribbean.

Well, this ruined my day. I've been using sprays from Coppertone and Neutrogena. Both contain avobenzone and oxybenzone. ThinkSport 50 is available at a national chain but will also consider the zinc oxide SPF50 from Neutrogena. Having been treating pre-cancerous lesions and now a basal cell spot, I'm still working on 100% application but usually forgot to apply for yard maintenance. I guess I've always associated sunscreen with "fun" outdoor activities. The sprays are/were so convenient to apply quickly.

Sorry to ruin your day! I read somewhere to avoid oxybenzone, and to avoid the sunscreens/sunblocks that "absorb the rays", which apparently is what oxybenzone does. The same article suggests using those products that "block" the rays. I used Golfersskin for several years until I discovered that it has oxybenzone. So I switched to Skin Sunscreen. I am just grateful that their product does not stain my white golf shirts! I've have many white shirts that have been stained by other sunblocks.

Whatever you choose to use or choose to do, protect yourself while enjoying your time playing golf!

I put it on every time I go out and then re-apply every 2 hours thereafter (usually at the turn if I'm playing 18), I have very fair skin and burn easily. When I worked at a course I wore a floppy sun hat too since I was outside for 8-10 hours per day. I have a bottle of Banana Boat SPF 50 right now, works well for me. I do have to be careful about the clothing staining though with Banana Boat, so I'll stay tuned to the thread if anyone has good recommendations, if Skin had the 50 in the non-spray I'd check that out, I just prefer the lotion variety.

Try to avoid the spray-on at the course. It will damage the grass where applied, especially around the greens. I am also trying to wear wide brimmed hats in summer and long sleeve shirts and full length pants when its not too hot. Probably waited way too many years to avoid issues i am seeing now days.

I spent a lot of years trying to become a bass pro and very rarely used sun screen. I was burnt most of the time. Now as I get older I worry about the damage I may have done. I want to start using sunscreen but worry about my hands being oily or getting it on my grips.

I use Blue Lizard Sunscreen. It is mineral based and I find that it provides the best protection for me.

As a kid growing up we didn't use sunscreen......Now and for the past number of years, I've used it. I have had two MOHs surgeries as a result of learning things the hard way. I always wore a cap outside but this season I'm wearing a wide brimmed hat. Sometimes when I use a push cart I put up an umbrella which helps tremendously.
The direct SUN is not your friend.

I've been using Neutrogena Dry Touch 100+ on my ears for about a year now and have had really great results. Sometimes I was not sure if it was sunburn or windburn but since using this product I never have any burn at all. This is one product that actually works as advertised. Wearing a hat with a brim also makes perfect sense.

Fair-skinned so I use a lotion sunscreen every time I play. On sunny days it's a big hat and sun sleeves. Sunscreen is just part of the routine and I (and many others) believe it absolutely necessary.

I use it before every round. Usually use whatever the wife has laying around.

Banana Boat sport sunscreen spf 30 for me. I have a shaved head as well and need to apply it. Not a fan of the spay on sunscreen, but that is just me.

Sunblock is essential. I've been using Jack Black SPF45 Sun Guard for years now. It's oil-free and not tested on animals. I've also stocked up on a few bucket hats this year to help provide additional protection from the sun.

Yes, it is a must. The ozone layer isn't what it used to be and being in the sun will cause much more damage, so just do it. Personally, I HATE the stuff with a passion and never needed it and almost never burn, but I can tell the difference from years ago and know I will do damage if I don't wear it.

I cannot stand greasy sunscreen, especially with a shaved head as well. I have tried more suncreen brands than I can count and I always look up the ratings for sunscreen on the EWG website (www.ewg.org/.../).

They will review the ingredients of the sunscreen and tell you what they mean for your body. I find it most important to compare my desire to wear it vs the negative effects and find balace that works for me. Some people may need a 1 rating and I might be ok with a 3. Depends on you and your skin type or preference.

I found a great one for my face and shaved head: "Coppertone Defend & Care Oil Free" SPF 30 that is rated a 2 and feels pretty darn good compared to others I've tried with this rating. They have it on Amazon. Still toying around with others for everywhere else. I did find a couple sprays that are 3's that I'll use if I have to, but better to rub one on that lasts.

To add to my earlier post, I have now got some Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry Touch SPF 50, oxybenzone free so that should be better, and it is definitely less greasy than the stuff I had before. Thanks NoleinSC for reminding me of those ingredients to try to avoid.

Does anyone here use SPF lip balm, or do you think it's necessary in addition to regular sunscreen?

Every time I play golf in the warm months I see multiple people completely burnt to a crisp, that's gotta be keeping the dermatologists busy.
