  1. I am not quite sure if this is the right forum for my comments.

I am a brand new golfer. My daughter and I just started to take lessons through a veterans organization called the GIVE Foundation. Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere. The foundation gave us a brand new set of golf clubs. They are made by Wilson. Its a great beginner set. It seems to me that all golf clubs have the same degree angle. For example a six iron; it seems that all six irons have the same degree angle. If this is true then the only difference would be the shaft-metal versus carbon fiber. So why are there so many price points on metal shafts and on carbon shafts? It do not understand why an iron set costs $500.00 when an entire set- irons, woods, pw, sw and putter with golf bag costs $380.00? I don't understand. I am missing something, but I don't know what. Also, what is the difference between a Titleist club versus a Wilson or cally club or is it just brand preference? Thank you for your help.

Man that is a broad question.

    1. Iron lofts. They vary from company to company and even different types of clubs from the same company. There are “Player’s” clubs “Game Improvement” clubs and some in the middle.

    2. Club heads are made through different processes and from different materials which impact spin, control, fell, dispersion, etc. Forged vs Cast is one example.

    3. The shafts primarily impact ball flight which helps with the dispersion.

Welcome to the game and it will take a lifetime to learn but don’t get overwhelmed. The most rewarding and frustrating sport I have ever encountered. Enjoy the ride.

Great questions and you will likely get lots of responses. Fist assumption on loft. Not all 6 irons have the same loft. They will be close to the same range but may vary 2 or 3 degrees based on set makeup. Most "game improvement" irons will have stronger lofts and more offset than players blades. Head material, manufacturing methods, material quality will all factor into cost to produce therefore price to the consumer. The better you get as a golfer, the more you will notice the differences and will likely take into consideration when selecting the tools you use. Same with shaft material. Basic manufacturing of steel shafts and material used will set the pricing apart but even within each, new materials or techniques will differentiate performance and create some higher priced variants. We as Titleist enthusiasts will support our belief that one of the biggest factors for us in the difference between Titleist clubs is the overall quality and performance. Sure, every golf club does the same basic job, moves a ball closer the the hole, but look, feel, performance of a properly fitted club does make a big difference to most players as you will likely discover over your time playing in the future. Enjoy this great game and have fun.

First of all, from one veteran to another, welcome aboard! Right now don't get too hung up on golf clubs. Learn the golf swing with the set they gave you. I'm sure it's a good set for now as Wilson has been around for a long time making golf clubs. Focus on the swing and how to play the game properly for now. You have a long way to go until you start worrying about the technical side of equipment. Enjoy the game for a lifetime.

I think before you ask these questions let the game and bond with your daughter take over you first. Once the love, or addiction in most of our cases is there some of those questions will begin to answer themselves by the people you meet, shops you go to, and things you read and watch. Really glad you are getting into the game especially with your daughter. I hope it is the catalist for a long healthy relationship.
