Rule Question

  1. During practice rounds, when I am playing alone and unable to post the score anyway, I use tees positioned around the ball to help with alignment, strike pattern and divot pattern. Obviously I understand this violates Rule 10 for regular play. However, what is the ruling (under the new rules) on use of existing items on a tee box (clumps of grass, old tees or leaves) to help with alignment? More importantly, I understand that you cannot put down a tee or towel (or club) to help with alignment, but if you stand with feet on each side of the ball and that "leaves" temporary indentations, that then may assist with alignment does this violate the rule? My thought is yes, because I think making an indentation with your club or scuffing ground with your feet would be a violation, but many people stand behind the ball to establish the line. Is the violation in the intent? Stand to create indentations yes, stand in exact same location but try to avoid the indents... no?

If you think its a violation then it probably is.
As for standing over the ball and making indentations with your feet I'll just say be careful, although it may not be technically a violation you don't want to be THAT GUY just saying..Use what's already on the ground tee markers, patch of grass. broken tee, ....etc.. Just my 2cents..madgolfer hitemstraight

I think if you are knowingly doing it to make an alignment aid or point of reference then you are in the wrong. If there happens to be a foot print there and it helps you then you may be in the clear. Like mad golfer said, you dont want to be that guy!

You can certainly set up any way you want to something that already exists on the tee box, be it a broken tee, a dirt spot, a tee marker, a leave, a long strand of grass, whatever. What you can't do is move that leave or broken tee from where it lies into a position that better helps you in your alignment.
