Paying the full boat rate, what's the best value golf you've ever played?

Mine would have to be the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain in Washington state. Teed off around 3p for $25 which was plenty of time to play 18 with the sun setting closer to 10p. It was in awesome shape with better views. It was absolutely massive which is an odd trait I'm starting to realize I really love about courses. They have 36 holes on the property and it could have fit 72 easy. If you're ever in the Seattle area, I highly suggest making the hour trek.

A close second would be Washington County Golf Course in Wisconsin. Paid $18-ish for a twilight rate and again, got in all 18 easily. Pretty straight-forward layout but on a really cool piece of land. I play Torrey quite a bit and the conditions at Wa. County were the same if not better.

(Not my photos below, but first two are Gold Mountain and second two are Washington County.)

Id have to say Torrey Pines with the city resident card. There is no way I'd pay regular rates unless was to play the South once as its held a USO!

Great post Allen. I would have to say my own course. It's a county owned muni, and I've worked there for 24 years. After 3:00pm, you can play for 9 bucks!! It's a PGA course built by George Fazio in 1962. It's a hidden gem at the South Jersey Shore.
    Play Well,

Thanks for sharing Allan. I lie in Vancouver, Washington (Portland, OR) Metro area. I am going to have to get up to Gold Mountain and play the Olympic course. It looks gorgeous.

Great photos. Best course I played was St Charles GC in Winnipeg Manitoba. Played the Ross nine and the MacKenzie nine. One nine designedly Donald Ross and the other by Alister MacKenzie. played at prime time 1:00 pm for $50.00. Set up by one the pros at our course. Both nines were simply amazing and well worth the money.

Allan - Due to where I live it has to be Bethpage Black. I feel it is the toughest course I not only played but also been on while working USGA Events over the years. It is long and tough..
  7. I played the Black course a couple of weeks ago when visiting my son on the US Merchant Marine Academy on Long Island. Loved it even though it poured holes 9-14
  8. Bears Best in Vegas was a great deal for under $90. Also I just played The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge. For $50 including balls and a cart was so nice. Everything was in great shape

    I'd second Washington County.
  10. I live 10 minutes from Gold Mountain. We are so lucky here across the water from Seattle. 8 top quality courses within half hour and then a handful of decent ones and 3-4 lower level ones. Playing McCormick Woods today with 15 friends for my 50th b day.

You're very lucky indeed! I played Salish Cliffs for $20 but that was an industry discount so couldn't count it. I think the rack rate is $75-ish though and for that price I'd definitely put it in this conversation. Chambers isn't far off either with the resident rate.

    Such good golf in WA!
  12. Agree on Gold Mountain - lots of great public courses in that area to choose from, however I will go with Bandon, yeah its pricey, but worth every penny.

$99 at Chambers Bay. Was watching the prices online and saw a perfect time for $99 and grabbed it. What a treat to play that course for $99.
  14. Torrey Pines South Course at the resident rate. Although I am playing all the courses at Bandon Dunes next month so that might take the cake!!
  15. Best value was free. Growing up ages 12-15 mid 70's the Univ GA staff would let us sneak on. We only paid our $3.50 about half the time. We went off peak dead of heat summer and walked 18 or more. Some days we had to hunt for balls to play the next day. Never held anyone up or caused any issues for the few adult players.

We did get in trouble once when we found all kinds of balls in a waste sort of area.. Turns out one of the UGA team players was hitting practice balls from opposite direction and we didnt see him walking up as we were scooping up our Titleist balata treasure. Quite dissappointed we had to give them back and keep hitting our Top Flites.

I love getting a good loop at a low rate! With all the online deal sites like golf now and golf pass you can really find some solid rates in whatever your area is!

Best value... probably PGA West in the summer. If you can stand the heat, $39 is a great deal. Cheapest is my home track (Eagle Crest) but not a great value given it's rough condition the last couple of years. Maybe one of the best values is winter golf at Bandon. Do it every year. At $100 green fee and $50 replay and $120 night room, playing four of the top 15 public courses in the US is a pretty good deal.

Wente Vineyards in Livermore CA was a steal for $60 weekend afternoon special as opposed to $180 normal rack. It was well kept from tee to green. Gorgeous views while winding through vineyards. Very peaceful and serene setting.

Best that I have played was Ailing Memorial in New Haven...lovingly called Muni. It is the poor man's Yale, near it , a 1/4 the price and in the best shape I've ever seen it this year.

Allan those courses in picture looks great and to play it in those prices, I think that's almost unbelievable though I believe you, just jealous.

Bethpage Black course is $67ish for residents and $130 for visitors with some discount for resident seniors. Although that's not exactly what I call a good deal rate as a visitor, but I think that was ok and not crazy for a course that has had some very successful tournaments in its highest level. To top it off, I was able to be with my brother and friends and play the Black course in a perfect low to mid 70s temps on a Tuesday. As I pay the greens fee, my thoughts were the prices people pay for Torrey Pines... and that almost made me feel okay about $130.

In late May of this year my wife and I paid the after 3PM rate of $39 at RTJ Grand National in Opelika, AL. Played Lakes on a Monday and Links two days later. The Symetra Tour was in town the next week and the courses were both challenging yet playable. Would love to go back there every year to play such a beautiful course at that nice price.

I do a bit of volunteering in the area. Best rates so far, The Ocean Course @ Kiawah Island, Bulls Bay Club, Daniel island Club, and Rivertowne Country Club, no charge. Country Club of Charleston, $25.00. It also pays to play with golfers who work at these type courses (superintendents and shop pros/managers).

During college at Ohio State I could play the Scarlet course for $25 walking. Most recent would be Cog Hill #4 Dubsdread for $90 twilight rate.
  24. All sound wonderful, but I would have to say....wait for it.....Coronado golf course , Coronado, California. Having ties to San Diego I have had the good fortune to play some of the courses around the area. Great twilight price and the best Cobb salad and beer combo I have had. Just cant say enough good things about that course as well as all around the San Diego area.
