One of my biggest problems seems to be, I pick to many of my irons clean with out taking any grass. The opposite is I tell myself to take a divot and I get to steep and jam my self.

So I ask what drills or mental work do you guys do to take a clean, consistent Divot when hitting irons?

I'm a picker of the ball as well...
That being said my new T100's have an amazing leading edge...the turf interaction is awesome!
Loving the new feel and my ability to take some small divots...I have more confidence to go after the ball a bit more!

    Give the T100's a try!!!

Guilty as charged, I too am a picker except for my 54* wedge. I always remove turf with it.

Tom Watson had a pretty good career picking the ball clean. One of the reasons he was such a good "bad weather" player. As long as you are not scooping and hitting up there is nothing wrong with clean contact. Stick with your pro's recommendation and play what works best for your swing. Oh, and welcome back. Don't feel you have to flood the site with new posts to make up for lost time. :)

    Yep I’m a picker.
  6. Wow I'd take picker any day of the week. I'm very much a digger.

If you're constantly picking the ball with your irons, you're probably making contact at the start of the upswing as opposed to the bottom of the downswing. Most good iron players catch the ball right before their swing arch bottoms out; they hit down on the ball slightly, compressing it more, resulting in solid contact.

Try moving the ball back in your stance slightly when playing an iron.

    Hope this helps.

I pick it clean and it works well for me. I've tried the ball then divot and I can't do it. But I hit my irons straight so I am not concerned about it too much. Until I hit a thicker shot then I know I broke down my right knee and turf flies then. Lol

If it's your swing master it, before trying to think it needs corrected. But ball position can help you find that happy medium.

Clean picker here! Proud of it.

I don't have an issue with spin, compression, distance, or flight....

    Embrace the clean pick!
  11. I agree with mike m, check your ball position. I mentioned this in another thread, but since switching from a +1" length and having a missing thin tendency to a +1/2" length and making night and day improved contact with nice ball first then shallow divots with the T100's. Maybe check your fitting, or check with a pro and see if you "pull away" right before impact. Anytime i tried to hit one harder, i tended to pull away and catch them thin. Shortening the club has made it a non-issue.

We see the pros take huge divots and sometimes think "picking" is faulty. I'm certainly no swing doctor but I've seen several coaches use a towel or small sponge 6-10 inches behind the ball to encourage their students to bottom out their swing appropriately and make a divot in front of the ball (without contacting the towel). When I start to come over the top (fight the slice), I'll often utilize the towel drill.
