New to golfing

    Good morning all! Let me start off by saying that I am 67, retired twice, and brand new to the golfing sport. A friend gave me a mix-matched set of clubs (png, Cobra, TM, Cleveland, Rife), TM bag, mixed brand balls, tees, etc. In the last three weeks, I’ve played my first six 18-hole rounds (Cerbat Cliffs in Kingman, AZ and Jekyll Island Island, Brunswick, GA) and dug more holes than allowed. My average score so far has been 144....only because of the maximum stroke count....hahahah! Through a fluke of luck, my best score was 102. I am enjoying the sport much more than I initially thought I would and am in the process of purchasing a complete Titleist set. So far, I’ve obtained two Titleist wedges: Vokey SM7 54*/08M and 58*/12D, and a Tommy Armour Impact No. 3 putter. By the end of the week, I hope to have a Titleist TS2 10.5* driver. Then I’ll concentrate on a set of irons. Also purchased a Titleist glove and cap - gotta look the part too... hahahaha!     Welcome to the team Karl!! It sounds like you've been bitten by the golf bug like the rest of us. Over time you will come to appreciate the Titleist equipment you currently have and are getting in the future. I'm currently gaming a TS2 10.5* and absolutely love it. I'm sure you'll feel the same when you get yours and get it dialed in.

    Welcome to the game. It's a great way to get exercise especially if you have a course that is walkable. With enough playing time and some more knowledge of the game, you'll be under 100 in no time.

    My most important lesson was to stop giving myself lessons and turn myself over to a pro. Teaching myself I spent several years at over 120 including generous use of mulligans. More important than Titleist equipment was learning better habits. My struggle to score under 90 is the bad habits I taught myself creep back in during a round. I started at 59 and now at 70 my game is coming around.

    My best teacher is also my fitter. My other hard-learned lesson is the worst person to guide me on equipment selection is me. New equipment not properly fit won't work better than a used club blindly selected online.

    Even in the low 90's, I get a great deal of satisfaction enjoying the outdoors. Next year when I am retired and can play more than 30 rounds a year, I'm hoping to be more consistent.

    Karl: Welcome to the crazy world of Titleist loyalists. Now that you have the bug and before you invest in any more equipment, play with what you have, go see a PGA instructor to help get your game in shape and then go see a fitter and get clubs for your game. Hopefully Titleist. It will make this crazy game more fun. Again, welcome aboard and to this insane game we all call golf, which is flog spelled backwards.....and we all do flog that little white ball at times...just goes with the game....with respect, cheers...geaux Tigers...just guessing.....Rocky Top, home sweet home to me.....am a SEC rat.....

    Welcome! Never to old or young to pickup the game. I’d recommend the T300 irons if you are buying new. If not, you can probably find some nice AP1s out there!

    Hi Karl,

    Welcome aboard. You will find here a group of dedicated Titleist loyalists, and, a group in love with the sport of golf. Advice, contests and anecdotes on everything golf. Enjoy and good luck! I also recommend you get some lessons from a PGA instructor. They can save you a lot of trial and error by giving you a good review of solid fundamentals.

    You can't buy a game...you have to work at it! Get lessons, hit the practice green, work on chips...in a few weeks you'll be shooting in the 70's!!!

    Go and have some lessons with a pro then he will be able to recommend what irons will suit you.
    £350 for a TS2 is a lot of money to fork out on one club at this time. You can get a good used set of AP1's for that amount. How nany times are you likely to hit a driver in one round compared to how many times you hit your irons, your irons are the key to better scores. You have a couple of good Vokey wedges, probably get a 50 degree as well or whatever fits in with your gapping. If the putter works for you then carry on with it until you feel the time for a change.

    Get it right now and you will enjoy this fantastic game hopefully for a very long time.

    You will now need to get a third job to fund cigars, beer and all the other accessories proper playing of the game requires. You may want to set aside a few dollars for the sports psychiatrist you'll consider now that you're hooked. Play well and stay safe.

    Hey guys, thanks for all the welcomes and advice! I’m retired....twice....after 44-years in law enforcement and about to start part-time with a US Marshals position here. A friend who is a seasoned golfer suggested the Titleist TS2, 11.5*, Senior flex, which should arrive in just a few days. Another friend is a golf pro/instructor that will start helping me soon. Till then, I practice daily in my yard with the plastic practice balls, concentrating on tips I’ve received from friends. I was looking at the T300 irons today, but I’ll follow advice above and play with what I have before jumping into what I may or may not need. Again, appreciate any and all advice or suggestions! Thank you very much!

    I would like to welcome you to the Team Titleist family. I always knew had a love for the sport but never knew how much I would love this game. I started playing when I was 5 with my Dad. He always is a big part of my golf game and success. He always taught me to a gentleman on the golf course. You don't go to goof off you go there to be respectful and have fun. I kinda got back into the game of golf when I was about 10-11 but that kinda fell off because I really wanted to play football. I then stopped playing until I was 13. Then my Dad gave me his old clubs and I started to play more and more and more and more. I turned 14, finished my first half of freshman year at High School, and tried out for the golf team. I made the team and played in one tournament as the Sixth Man then it got canceled because of Covid-19. This summer I worked super hard on my game which leads me to today. I am 15, getting ready to finish my sophomore year of High School. I am trying out again this season to see if I can become a Starter on the team.
