It was the mother of my children who exposed me to this game that we all love. The best memory I have is the first golf outing we had at a par 3 nine hole course. Prior to that outing, I never played golf outside of a PE course I took in high school and even then, it was hitting balls at net...never playing a course.

My thoughts going into the outing was it was going to be a fun time outdoors and she downplayed her skill level as an "occasional golfer." Without going into all the details, let's just say, she was way better than she led me to believe. From that point forward, my goal was to be competitive with her and I can say after 20+ years, it's been a wonderful adventure and a lot of fun. Happy Mother's Day to my lovely wife and I'm looking at celebrating with you at the golf course.

Probably the fact that she'd get up so early on the weekends to give me a ride to the club to caddie. Kept me from hitchhiking.

Though time of the year for me. Lost my mom in April at the age of 52 to lung cancer from smoking in 1977. She is in a better place and I do remember her on Mother's Day. She was a very special mom. Raised two teenage sons on her own.
  6. My mom served as our junior high golf coach, although she was the school librarian and never played golf. She would sign team team up for tournaments in the area, drive us to the events, and then read a book while we played. After the tournaments, she would take us for a meal and then drive us home.

Our team wasn't all that great in those first years, but we got better with time and years later we went on to play in the Texas state high school championships with many of us getting down to low single digit handicaps. I made many great friends through the experience of playing on the school golf team, fell in love with the game /competing, and learned so many life lessons because she took the time and effort to help us all get started. A couple of my teammates now make their living in the golf business and it all started from her willingness and effort all those years ago!

    Thanks Mom! Happy Mother's Day!
