  1. Any recommendations on walking some courses? I’m really looking forward to walking some historic courses next season, preferably ones without houses down the fairways. What do you guys recommend to be prepared?

Be prepared by doing some daily walking in your neighborhood. Use a pull cart or a light carry bag like a Players 4 Carbon and comfortable shoes. I like the FootJoy Traditions. Some courses will have caddies which will make walking a course much easier. Some hilly courses can be a challenge and many modern courses are designed for real estate sales so they are crazy long walks with lots of space between greens and the next tee. Pick your walking courses wisely. Enjoy!

    Good shoes.
Not kidding. As you age you'll appreciate that advice.

Lightweight bag if you plan on carrying a bag. If you plan on using a push cart, Clicgear, easy to maneuver, lightweight and will accommodate most bags.

If you are not accustomed to walking, get physically fit. Be able to walk at least four miles, that should be about the distance of most golf courses, walking. Stay hydrated, even in the winter months.

Have fun and enjoy your walk.

Lightweight bag (carbon 4) and try to decide on 12-13 clubs, and only pack 6 balls if you typically use 3 or less. If carrying a bag is not your routine. Great bag for walking classic courses.

My high energy herding dog gets a 2.8+ mile walk daily. That and a 3x per week overall conditioning lets me walk circles around younger golfers. My home course is almost 5 miles (monster green to tee walks through the ‘hood). It is fairly hilly, so my push cart is battery powered. I think the Scottsdale event will include carts, so the Carbon 4 will stay home.

It's a must to have a good lightweight stand bag. My preference would be the Players4 Carbon (mentioned here already). I believe this is one of the best carry bags out there; it has plenty of room for gear if needed and has no problem with 14 clubs. Comfortable shoes also is very important; FJ has a great selection of shoes that will provide the comfort a walker will need.
  8. As others have said make sure you are in shape, being exhausted is no way to play, comfortable shoes, either a light carry bag, Carbon 4, or if you prefer a trolley, I love my Bag Boy Nitron. Lightweight and incredibly easy set up and store.

I love walking the golf course. If you are in good shape, there are only a few things to keep in mind:

First, make sure you are well hydrated with water and a light snack before you start walking. Wear comfortable and breathable clothing, and suitable golf shoes. I personally use the Players 4 or heavier Linksmaster bag, but I recommend minimizing the weight of your bag by getting rid of any unneeded items such as excessive tees and balls. Don't forget to stretch before teeing off to prevent injuries.

    Enjoy your round!

I walk each round. Used to use a push cart but pushing up hills where I play at my home course, plus when I play the Black is not easy. Since the beginning this year purchased a Bat Caddy Electric remote control caddy. Makes walking courses (Anywhere from 14K to 18K) steps a lot easier and still get the exercise and saves the back. Good Luck..

I am 79 and walk a big golf course. I have a Sun Mountain Zero-G bag with a hip belt that significantly helps in carrying a 27 pound bag of clubs and balls around a BIG golf course. I have a pedometer that shows I walk around six miles. A friend that pushes a cart walks around seven miles. I have been walking and carrying a bag for over seventy years. But you have to get into walking shape to carry. I also carry a bottle of water in addition to seven golf balls. I find lots of golf balls walking through native grass areas so it helps to play with people that have a powered cart.
  12. Get a Clickgear pull cart and do a lot of stretching before AND after your round ... great way to burn calories. And, nice pace of play. Gives you time to fully consider your next shot.

To prepare for walking the golf course, you will need good fitting shoes and socks, and, get into walking shape.

If you are going to carry your golf clubs, a light weight carry/stand bag is a good idea. Or, a push cart (manual, or motorized).

My preparation is to walk about 3.5-4 miles daily (I'm retired). I use a push cart (Clicgear 3.5+), though, on occasion, I will carry with 8-9 golf clubs.
