I would love to play across the pond for a couple of weeks at several courses in different countries, ending at St Andrews of course ;)

So many great places to play in the UK, especially Scotland.

I play quite a bit at Turnberry, great hotel right on the ocean. I also play quite a bit a Royal Troon, Glasgow Gailes, Western Gailes, and Dundonald Links. Right up the road is Old Prestwick (home to the first 12 Open Championships), not my favorite place to play but you should try it once if you can.

On the east coast if you are in the St Andrews area, one of the best places to play is Kingsbarns. and about 30 minutes up the coast is Carnoustie. It is said to be the toughest test of golf in Great Britian until the wind blows, then it is the toughest in the world!

You didn't specify Scotland, England, or Ireland.  Even so, there are so many courses - so little time.  I avoided or was unable to schedule at the top courses in Ireland.  St. Andrew's is about the only place I'd be willing to book a year in advance.  Belmullet has a #11 ranking in Ireland.  Only has 11 bunkers, but it worked me harder than the Straits course.  A lot of blind shots in and around very large dunes.  ...Go with a member..  Strandhill has a good resort next door for a one-stop stay and some of the best views from the course.  Just some suggestions off the beaten paths of the well-known spots.

Earlier this year, I played in a tournament in Ireland.  We stayed at Doonbeg and played the tournament rounds on Ballybunion, Lahinch and Doonbeg.  It was a blast!  Met a lot of great guys from both the US and from Ireland and the courses and people were great.  We played quite a few other rounds on our way to and from the tournament in Ireland on a number of the other wonderful and famous courses, but the overall experience of actually playing competive rounds in Ireland is what made it special (and it gave us a real appreciation of the varying conditions those guys play in over there).

I've never played in the UK but Scotland's "Golf Coast" looks promising.  A ton of Links courses right on the sea sounds nice!

I've had an opportunity to play several courses throughout the world, including the UK/Ireland.  As much as I enjoy meeting people from other countries and experiencing their cultures, I still prefer what we have here in the USA.  

Chicagoland is a great example.  Quality facilities, outstanding designs and reasonable costs at 100 + courses.  Gotta love it!
