Hi TT, I'm heading to SD in April and I'm planning to sneak out for 36 holes on a Wednesday. Has anyone here played both courses at Torrey in the same day?

I plan to get out with the morning walk up groups for the first round, and then I'll try my luck for the second 18.

Any advise on how to get out or how to score better would be much appreciated. Thank you TT Josh

I just played the south course on Valentine's Day. Currently the back 9 of the north course is closed for renovations. Since your going on a Wednesday it shouldn't be to bad or hard to get on. The protocol for getting In line for a walk on on a weekday is to take your bag down to the starters shack and place it in line. Only one bag is required per group. If your going alone it should be no problem to get on as a walk on. The more in your group the more difficult. I got there at 445 on a Sunday and was number 4 in line and went off at 645. The course opens at first light but the pro shop and starters open up at 6 am for payment. With the upcoming time change this weekend though the hours change slightly I don't remember off the top of my head but it's like a 30 minute change. Also check the Torrey pines calendar online and make sure they don't have an event scheduled for that day or you won't get off. If you have anymore questions let me know I love about 40 min north of there. FYI I included a pic of my ball in the rough 2 weeks after the farmers was played there during my round lol it was crazy but fun!

Save your money and play the North course. Mirror image of the South course and half the price.
  4. Did it 2 years ago, Get the cart, I walked both courses and my feet were dying.
Show up early for the first 18, go for the south first.

I'm sneaking out for some golf on the first Monday in April. The North Course renovation is a game changer. When both were open, I showed up around 9am as a walk-on and was able to get on in less than 40 minutes, playing the North twice and South once over the years. Playing the tees matched to your length, the South course is a little easier for us shorter guys. The north course in September won't have 6 400+ yard par 4s from the whites. So the question will be how hard is it for walk-ons with only the South fully open.

You can walk on the north and play the front twice if you want, only the back is closed. It wasn't difficult at all 2 weeks ago on a Sunday

Thanks for all the advise TT. I'll be flying in from the East Coast, so getting up early won't be an issue. I plan to get there at first light and head straight to the south course. If I get to play the north, or even just 9 holes of it I'll consider it a bonus.

As for walking 36, I've got a great pair of FJ's so I'll be fine!

Josh- you should look up Barona GC...it's one of the best courses in San Diego County!

    Hi TT,
I'm going to need to look into some alternate options. Apparently the course is closed for aeration the day I planned to play.
I'll look into the suggestions listed here, but if anyone has any other good courses in or around San Diego, please let me know.

    Hi TT,
Looks like April in San Diego is Arifiiatcon month... Maderas GC seems to be the only place with active greens. Has anyone played there before?

I got up dark and early and scored the first tee time. The greens were punched on the South, but other than a little sand on the Scotty, they actually rolled pretty well. The North's greens were in great shape and rolled really fast. What a gem Torrey is. It's most definitely a municipal course- the pro shop is stocked to the gills, but the facilities reminded me of a public pool. Once you get to the course though, it's a whole other world. The walk is amazing in itself, and sunrise at Torrey Pines isn't too shabby either.
You can definitely see why (and how) this place hosted a US Open. The rough is crazy thick, and many of the greens were fairly small. I played from the blues and it was looooong. I think I wore out my 4 iron.

    Hi TT,
Well SD was a blast. I got to play Maderas and Torrey's South course and the front 9 of the North. Maderas is a cool layout that winds around a creek and canyons. It's a Troon course, so it was in good shape and had that country club feel. I came really close to an ace here too.

Great pictures Josh, it sounds like you had a great trip and a chance to play two great courses. Maderas was the site for one of the TT invitationals back in 2014 and the course was great. I also had a chance to play Torrey when I was out there and agree with your assessment. Thanks for sharing and bringing back some good memories of those courses.
