My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Scotland. 2 nights on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh to rid ourselves of the jet lag. What a great old city! It was the end of festival and we had a blast.
Then took the train to St. Andrews for 4 nights and 4 rounds at St. Andrews. We stayed at the Golf Inn, just a half block up the street from the R&A. One morning I joined the queue at the Old Course starters shack at 4:00 am, was 12th in line, 8 made it on as singles. Played the New twice, Eden and Castle. Had a great caddie one round at the New.
After St. Andrews the train back to Endinburgh and picked up the rental car. First stop Gullane and 3 nights in North Berwick, from where we played the Glen, Dunbar and Kilspindie on the way back to Edinburgh for one more night on the Mile before flying home.
Glen could use a little TLC. We really enjoyed Gullane and Dunbar. Kilspindie we teed off in a steady rain, which after 4 holes turned into a hurricane. I decided enough was enough when I hit 4 iron and 4 iron to make 230 yards to the front of the green. After 8 holes we opted for dry clothes and lunch. The lady serving us lunch said we did well, as the members came, drank coffee and told a few stories before going home. Too bad about the "full Scottish experience" at Kilspindie, as the little track had the nicest greens of any course we played.
I loved the seaside links golf and the people we met along the way were wonderful. Sure wish I could go back.
