A lot of public options in the Charlotte area. If you do a search for Charlotte NC golf courses click on charlotteagenda .com. They have their list of the top ten with good descriptions, rates, and how to get there.

All depends where you'll be living and how far you're willing to travel. Pinehurst is two hours away and there has to be 40 to 50 good courses within an hour of Charlotte. Also, how much are you willing to pay? There are good to very good courses for $30-$40 and you could spend over $100 for a big name. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you're here for 4 months you've got plenty of time to try a bunch of different ones.

I was in Charlotte for a long weekend during the 2019 Masters. Nearly rained out the entire weekend but we managed to sneak in 18 on Sunday at the Club at Ballantyne. Considering all of the rain that had come down this course was in pretty decent shape and I would definitely go play it again. There are a lot of public options and they all seem to be reasonably priced. Nice TopGolf location nearby, too.

Tot Hill in Asheboro, NC is a nice course. in 2007, golf digest ranked it the 7th hardest course in the country. careful of the snakes on the course thou.

I live in NW Charlotte and most of my rounds are played in the Pinehurst area. the 2 hour drive is worth it for me to play better courses. Plus it gets me out of Charlotte for a day.

I go down to Lake Norman (Mooresville, NC.) every year for the 4th of July (Family) we don’t play too fancy of tracks down there but I enjoy playing at Warrior (In between Mooresville/China Grove) and Ive played at Verdict Ridge (Denver, NC.) once.

There are some pretty good public courses in the Charlotte area...I would recommend Verdict Ridge (a little outside of Charlotte in Denver, NC), Rocky River GC, Stonebridge CC, and Skybrook CC.
  9. Depends where you're going to be, budget, etc.

However, a few daily fee and/or semi-private courses that you should be able to find on the web pretty easily:

    - Springfield GC (south)
    - Rocky River GC (northeast) (mentioned above)
    - Olde Sycamore GC (east)
    - Verdict Ridge GC (northwest) (also mentioned above ... great recommendation)
    - Birkdale GC (north)

Ballantyne Resort (south) is pending closure (was supposed to be sometime this year last I read). It's a good course, but not as good as it was before some holes were re-routed a few years back and it's a little pricey compared to some of the others mentioned.

Thanks for all the good information. My mother retired to the Charlotte area (Huntersville), I haven't played yet when I've visited, but one of these trips I've been meaning to.

I live in Waxhaw which is just SE of Charlotte and belong to Firethorne Country club. Here are some of the best or enjoyable course I have played.

    Ballatyne Resort
    Skybrooke Golf Club
    Tega Cay Golf Course
Edgewater Golf Club (short drive into SC)
    Carolina Lakes Golf Club
    Stonebridge Golf Club
    Warrior Golf Club

My wife and I both liked Rocky River. Easy to get to, nice clubhouse, rural setting, no houses (however one big hotel), cool to see grandstands of dragway and speedway. Good variety of holes.
  13. My son lives in Charlotte and I live in Winston-Salem so we usually meet to cut down the drive for both of us. These are all good options just north of town.

    Warrior (China Grove)
    The Revival at Crescent GC
    Rocky River
River Oaks in Statesville (has a mountain feel)

Plus you are not that far away from Pinehurst area (2 hrs.) nor Myrtle Beach (3 hours)

Charleston and Horry County are the two hot spots for spike in the virus in S Carolina and Myrtle Beach is in Horry County. S Carolina, Arizona and Texas are tied for the highest number of spikes in the virus in the world right now. Does not stop people from coming to our beaches and golf courses, they are packed. Might not be a safe place to be. Just saying......

Timely article in the aforementioned Agenda ranks the best public courses:
    www.charlotteagenda.com/.../

    Their rankings:
Honorable mentions: Stonebridge, Red Bridge, River Oaks, Monroe Country Club & Lincoln Country Club
    10: Warrior
    9: Edgewater
    8: Skybrook
    7: Eagle Chase
    6: Rocky River
5: The Golf Club at Ballantyne
    4: Mooresville GC
    3: Rock Barn (Jackson Course)
    2: Carolina Lakes
    1: Verdict Ridge

Definitely take advantage of being in NC and make the drive to the Pinehurst area while you're here though. The course around there (Pinehurst, Tobacco Road) make it worth the trip.

Only time I played in Charlotte was at the Charlotte Country Club for a Carolina Golf Association annual meeting. Very nice course but private.
