I am currently playing off a handicap of 28 and I've had some conflicting advice about custom fitting so I thought I would ask here.

Would my game benefit from from custom fitting or should I wait until my handicap drops?

I really like the look of Titleist clubs but I have been told that they are for 'better' players, is that true? Would I see any gain from using the AP1 over my current Deep Reds?

    Thanks

    Gary

    Hi Gary,

Firstly thanks for getting in touch and asking a great question that we hear from quite a few players in your position!

We strongly believe that EVERY golfer can improve their game and indeed their understanding of their game through custom fitting.

How much a player's handicap will change through custom fitted golf clubs will vary from player to player, but what we can say for certain is that if you are using the wrong model, shaft, shaft flex, lie, length, grip, grip size or ball, you're not playing to your full potential.

There are so many variables to consider with custom fitting - swing efficiency, swing speed, angle of attack, natural shot shape, bad shot, etc.  The best way to find out which iron model and set up suits your swing and allows you to reach your full potential would be to speak to your local Titleist SureFit account, attend one of our numerous Fitting Days held throughout the country or visit one of National Fitting Centres to receive expert advice and try a full range of options.

Details can be found here: http://www.titleist.co.uk/clubfitting/

Of course, custom fitting is one element of the formula for getting your handicap down - make sure it's in conjunction with some lessons and an active practice regime!

Can any other Team Titleist members share their experiences of custom fitting or let Gary have your view?

    - Neil

Do I have to go through a pro shop to book at the National Fitting Centres or can I book directly? I know that the nearest centre for me is St. Ives, would they be able to arrange the fitting?

    Thanks

    Gary

    Hi Gary,

All appointments are made through your pro or Titleist retailer - they will be able to book you a session at St Ives.

    Thanks

    Hi Neil,

How long would a fitting session last for a through the bag fitting? Is there a fee attached to the fitting?

    Thanks

    Gary

    Hi Gary,

A through-the-bag fit is two hours. You will need to check the cost with the pro that you book your appointment through.

    Hope this helps.

  7. Gary,

Got custom fitted for AP1  four weeks ago - handicap has dropped from 27 to 24 so yes, custom fit is good for 28 handicaps! Hope to be 18 by end of summer!

I agree it is important to make sure you are using the right shaft, lofts and lies, etc,  but being a 28 handicapper you need to ask yourself how consistent are your swings. If you did 20 swings will the ball flight be the same all the time, will your swing be the same? I was in a similar position a while back and being a high handicapper I kept playing around and trying new swings and techniques. If I had been fitted prior to this I doubt my shafts would be optimal for my current swing. Since then I am now down to 17 handicap and still considering waiting to get fit as I am still getting stronger and further tweaking my swing.
