Just some quick advice if I may.

I am due to be fitted for clubs next week at St Ives (through the bag)

Currently I am playing with game improvement clubs (a manufacturer beginning with C - Am i allowed to mention them here?) (Definitely not Sarah!!!! - Neil)

My handicap is not really indicative of my ball striking - since I haven't done a proper competition for ages. Although the last one I did was a 4 ball stableford and I scored around 45 points (contributing all the points for the mixed team) - but as such did not affect handicap.

Most of my additional shots come from poor putting (i often 3 putt), and being useless in wet sand (can take me >4 shots). But despite that i usually shoot in the 90s. (from the the men's tees, not the ladies)

My pitching wedge hits about 100 yards (>80%) (longer if I get a pure hit). My duffs with a pitching wedge are a bit short or pushed (about 10%).

My 3 hybrid goes about 180-190 yards, the three wood from 200 to 230 yards.

When I last went on a trackman my swing speed was given about 95 (although this was about a year ago). I'm not sure if I have slowed down or speeded up as my tempo has improved.

I also have a high launch angle

    SO, my question is this.

I was thinking about AP2 irons (suggested when I first had lessons with the Pro), but wondering if it is worth asking about the more blade-like irons - CB and MB. ..and before anyone suggests it - I am not at all keen on AP1 irons.

I know that they are harder to hit, and for some that takes the enjoyment away. BUT, i am keen to get clubs that will force me to get better. I think I am the sort of golfer that likes to hit as perfectly as possible, rather than being bothered by the score so much. Hence i have been mostly working on swing mechanics.

I would also like to have clubs that I can feel, and learn to work properly for harder courses that require shot making rather than just hitting straight.

I guess that the person fitting, will probably recommend something based on what they see. But I am worried that they will see a female golfer and automatically pull out the game-improvement clubs with ladies flex shafts, and don't want to look stupid for asking for player-type clubs.

    Cheers

    Hi Sarah,

You raise some fantastic points in your post and I am sure that I can put your mind at ease over the options available to you.

When you arrive at the National Fitting Centre at St Ives, your fitter will make an initial assessment after watching you hit balls - there are no pre-conceived opinions based on age or sex or any other factor. Everyone swings the club differently and the whole process is based around you and the fitter finding the optimum fit for you. It's important that you also go to the fitting with an open mind as well.

The fitter will, in all likelihood, ask if you have a preference for an iron and that may well be your starting point. They will also discuss your aims / goals and take that into consideration - it is a very consultative and inclusive process.

You can try different head and shaft options and performance of each will be monitored by our fitter watching the flight of the ball and referring to the numbers shown on the Trackman launch monitor - all of this will show you which club is performing best for you.

Ultimately, the choice of clubs is entirely at your discretion - our fitter will make a recommendation, but what you order is your choice.

As I said, go along with an open mind, relax and enjoy the fitting!

    - Neil

    Thanks for the reply!

Just as a matter of interest, is the fitting off mats or grass?

    Hi Sarah,

The fittings are carried out on mats.

    Thanks

Had my fitting today - Dan Friend at St Ives

Got there early. Is a nice venue.

Dan as suggested by his name was very friendly and patient!

Although I know I was told to relax, i couldn't help with being nervous.

Striking not as good as I can be, but not complete disaster. I think too often I tried to force the club to get more distance

But then got too arm-y or simply had no tempo.

In the end seem to be best with steel shafts for iron (a surprise), with an AP1/ AP2 combo, vokey wedges

With driver, wood and 2 hybrids.

Looking forward to get them asap

Once again, my thanks to Dan Friend and the rest of the titleist team.

The custom fitting is a fantastic experience.
