Has anyone any good tips to stop me taking to much ground or hitting a shank when trying to slow my swing down and try and take some off the shot? Chris

You should narrow your stance and shorten the length of your back swing as you still need to be committing to the shot. Narrowing your stance will also reduce the amount of movement in your body, naturally reducing your swing speed and should encourage a cleaner strike.

May be try gripping down the shaft a bit instead of slowing your swing

Also just thing about the follow through.  You are probably thinking too much about blazing it through the back and not letting the club do it its work, and bailing out of the shot??

Hi Chris My tip would be that rather than slowing your swing, shorten your backswing and make a positive strike on the ball. I have had issues with shanking on in-between shots and find that if I shorten my backswing but maintain my normal rhythm I get more control and spin. Hope this helps

lots of practice I found is the key, watching golf on the Tele they all do it so slow and steady, yet once I gave it a go... hit about two foot behind the ball, get panicked just before contact and flick my wrists through and blade it across the green. lots of practice is needed, I found the above advise very helpful, grip down the shaft, closer stance slightly open to the target, and never any more than a 3/4 swing. and most important of all commit and trust your swing! best of luck!

Try more weight on your left side if you're right handed. And don't transfer weight to your right side 60/40
