I've got the first ever version of the Scotty Cameron Red X. I used the putter for about 18 months before it went into storage while I took a golfing hiatus for 10 years. I start playing golf again about 2 years ago and to date I must have played about 400 rounds of golf with my putter and clocked a shed-load of hours on the putting green with it.

The putter still looks good aesthetically with no chips or scratches. Maybe it's my imagination, but I feel it's lost that soft Scotty feel. When do you know it's the right time to change your putter?

Try a few different ones out and see what looks, feels and works for you, you might be surprised and find that the old putter still has it.
