Wondering what everyone thinks about the new handicap system.WHS. in my opinion can’t see myself and my wife ever entering a mixed comp again.as we are both high handicap golfers 21.6 myself and 30.8 my wife.our course rating is 138/145.so even on our home course we are giving away shots like a leaking tap. We play golf for mostly pleasure playing in very few individual comps. Mostly due my eyesight and not seeing my ball flight or direction. It seems to me that we have no incentive whatsoever to enter comps. In our last comp I gave away 5 shots and my wife 6shots. Yet a low handicap golfer might be giving away very few shots. If WHS is to make the game fairer to all. Sorry but it’s a massive failure.unless your a low handicap golfer, when the odds are clearly in your favour.

Your 21 and your wife is 30 yet you say you are giving away shots and low handicappers giving away very few ??

From what I've seen so far it's the higher guys who will be getting all the shots, as at my club some guys have went up 5/6/7 shots where the low guys have come down a shot or two. One guy in particular has went from 23 to playing 36, never in a million years would I play him in a match, just so happens he's went unbeaten so far in the winter league.

guess things are different in different cases .can only quote our case.not every golfer wants to play in every comp.my index is 6 rounds from my last 18 .which have been over last 3 years.since which my eyesight as got worse.I must be unique but no matter what I still love my golf .but more than that I love my wife even more.and they joy we get from meeting others in mixed comps is something we don’t want to loose. Being pensioners do we continue paying entry fees to these comps ,when we have no chance of competing.this is why I think the new system is unfair.
  4. Is 21.6 you handicap index? Or is that your playing handicap on your course with a rating of 138?

Use to work for Notts .picture is from when I represented the club in London marathon football challenge.as you can see running in club kit,
Best thing was i beat Archie Gemill from over the river by well over a hour.
  8. I don't see how the odds favour the low handicap golfer. My handicap was cut to 1.7 from 3.2 while everyone else in my group - 15 players with handicaps ranging from 8 to 22 - received increases.
Not only that but no matter which golf course or tee combination I play on I will always receive 2 shots, and that includes from the championship tees at Royal St George's (rating 75.2 / par 70) or Royal Birkdale (rating 75.7 / par 73).

i guess its horses for course. i happen to be in favour of it, ive been a single figure golfer for a couple years now and have found it tough playing against higher handicappers when having to sometimes give a shot a hole. i played a matchplay event at a friends home course and i had to give 2 shots on a par 3.

I think over time it will prove to be a more accurate way of working out a handicap. Without buffer zones and the spectre of a 0.1, it might take some pressure off and make golf more enjoyable.

I’m not sure what the popularity of social rounds will be and we probably won’t find out until better weather arrives.

The 95% handicap allowance for individual competitions is a weird one. I guess it’s another attempt to level the playing field. Certainly, single figure course handicappers are happy to see higher handicappers losing strokes.

However, I can see more occasions when players are giving more that one stroke a hole in match play.

Having processed a few comps now, thanks goodness we have a computer system to help out!

we are dealing with this at our club and most of the issues are coming from the fact that WHS is different and taking members out of their comfort zone. We've run our first competitions now, including mixed, and it is working out well.

There is still confusion about how to get from Handicap Index to Course Handicap to Playing Handicap to Competition Handicap - but in our case IG takes care of it all.

I'd encourage all members to continue to play in competitions and forget about the mechanics of WHS!

There are a lot of people who will be significantly less competitive under the WHS umbrella - me included.
These may (or may not) include people that you play with/against.
Whilst winning is nice, it is not the be-all and end-all...
Aspects such as meeting, playing and socialising in the company of like-minded folk must surely count for something?
