TSR2+ - Try it if you get the chance

    Tried the TSR 2+ fairway today and was mightily impressed. Had it set at D1 making it 12.25 degrees loft and put it on a Tensai Raw Blue Regular shaft. It was not difficult to launch and went like a rocket both of a small (red castle 1.25") tee or off the mat. I found it user-friendly, in so far as it was possible to fade and draw, I liked the launch window and the control was better than my (TS3) driver probably because of the shorter shaft. Distance versus driver was not too shabby and I had the benefit of improved control.

    I tried the TSR2 (15 degree) last week - without the benefit of Trackman - but it seemed no discernible improvement on my TSi2 (15 degree) in terms of a distance comparison. The sound was, however, duller and much more satisfying. Wasn't persuaded to upgrade like for like at this point in time.

    I thought about the TSR2+ and concluded that it was a similar loft to a mini-driver and wondered if it could be for me. The answer is a resounding YES IT COULD!

    I was originally somewhat put off by the perceived "Better Player" aspect of the TSR2+ but either I'm better than I thought with Fairway woods or I'm a Better Player. Not sure which "Truth" I'm tempted to believe!

    The upshot of this tale is not to be put off this amazing club - give it a chance if you get the opportunity. Who knows, you too may be pleasantly surprised. If you do order one, there is currently a delay in delivery.... and you will be behind me in the queue!! JT

    I’m waiting to try this club but no one near me has one yet. Keep thinking about taking the gamble and just ordering one.

    Good to hear how you found it though, sounds like its a good club.

    I'm lucky - my friends at Foregolf in Chester, which is close to me, have all the options and are very helpful in letting customers try the demo products and with bespoke fitting.

    Don't wish to state the obvious if you already know about it, but have you tried looking under:

    CLUBS - Golf Club Fitting

    in tabs at the top of the page? Not everyone knows what's there and, in truth, it is a bit hidden away.

    its something im deffo keen on trying. driving has always been my worst part of my game, play off 8.3 but drive the ball like a mid handicapper for sure. However, im pretty good with a fairway wood, my 7 wood tsi is by far best club in the bag, 4 wood is good too but not as reliable. feel like i could drop the 4 wood and go for a tsr2+ for an alternative off the tee club.

    out of curiosity, are you usually in regular flex or have you gone for a softer/stiffer shaft?

    i dont feel the benefit of me upgrading my driver again to still have it be a club that doesnt behave, but could deffo see myself with the tsr2+

    would love to see them side by side with a regular tsr2. is the facw noticably bigger? deeper?wider?

    Like you, my driver is a love/hate relationship. When the planets align, I get distance but I can't rely on it. I've always preferred a small headed driver and I think, as I'm not tall, the longer shafts almost work against me.
    Provided a par 4 gives me the opportunity to get on with my second shot, I'm OK taking a fairway off the tee.
    I once had a driver on a 3W shaft, which I could handle, but I moved back to longer shafts in search of a few more yards.... Pathetic really.

    My club-head speed has always been on the cusp between Regular and Stiff so I've usually gone for the Reg.
    I seem to be best suited to the Tensai Blue and have it on both my TSi2 3W & TSi2 21* hybrid.

    I may upgrade the driver but I will be seriously thinking about shaft length and if it doesn't go further than the 2+, then it won't be going in the bag.

    I have to say, I'd read that the 2+ was slightly larger but I didn't find it noticeably so.

    You need to give this a go.... Good luck

    you sound very much like me, driver shafts seem to be getting longer with every new model, ive done much tinkering with shafts including a 910 3 wood shaft as they fit into the drivers. im also like you regarding being inbetween flexes, currently gaming a tensei blue regular, but find it a little loose if stepping on it.

    i was hopin gthe tsr2+ head was going to be noticable in head size against the regular, anyhow ive got a fitting with Ben my local titleist rep a couple weeks time. really looking forward to it

    Great post JT. I have been thinking about putting a 3 wood shaft in my driver as I think the shorter length will help control with no loss in distance ( no science behind this, older drivers had shorter shafts), but the TSR2+ makes a lot of sense too. Will definitely try this club out when I get the opportunity.

    I remember in the early 70's graphite shafted Drivers came in but they were "ahead of their time" and the (steel) heads and graphite shafts were not a brilliant match. The graphites had a range of issues so we all went back to steel shafts. The steel heads were smaller and the steel shafts shorter. I think - and maybe it's wishful thinking on my part! - I was as accurate with them as anything I have ever played, and barring the occasional Sunday Best, probably

    When the new generation of graphite shafts and bigger heads came along, the heads and shafts, like Pinnochio's nose, kept on growing. Now I feel that they are too long for my height and as a consequence, I lose control of the big face. My dynamic loft can be astronomical. Better, I think, to be short on the short grass than long in the long grass.
    So that's my logic and I'll be looking at the TSR2+ as my standard and maybe a driver on a 43" shaft if that goes reliably further...

    JT, I still have a hand made persimmon driver which I would love to use again. I was very accurate with that too. The older clubs were definitely made for shot makers. I think of the great players of the 80’s who made the most of this type of equipment, there was none better than Seve in my opinion. I love the new stuff, but it’s a totally different game now.

    I fully agree - Different game now...
    I remember a bloke I used to play with bought a set of blond persimmon woods, which he let me have a go with...
    They were a thing of beauty.
    I was playing a (cheap) set of laminate woods at the time and definitely had club envy!
    Anyway, he moved off to Vale of Llangollen shortly after so they were "Out of Sight".

    an update, had my fitting today, really like the new tsr setup, tried the tsr2+ and hit hit fairly well, quite a flat trajectory however didnt really improve on my 16.5 tsi for numbers wise other than overall distance. the loft just didnt suit my fairly low flight.

    however we tried out the new tsr 16.5 and produced better numbers but the low spin version was like night and day difference. the ball got out there and a better flight, 5mph ballspeed increase, 7 yards of carry extra and still rolled out well.

    it maid a signifacant difference in performance with my best and worst swing. so put in my order for one! :D
