Chawrasia Successfully Defends Hero Indian Open Title

 a

Relying upon the New Pro V1x golf ball, Shiv Shankar Prasad (SSP) Chawrasia made European Tour history with a convincing seven-shot victory over his nearest competitor, successfully defending his title at the Hero Indian Open.

The victory continued Chawrasia’s remarkable record at his national Open where he was runner-up four times before finally triumphing last season.

This second win in New Delhi made him the first Indian to successfully defend a European Tour title. He also becomes the first player to win his first four European Tour victories in his  home country. In addition to his two Indian Open victories, Chawrasia captured the 2008 Emaar-MGF Indian Masters and the 2011 Avantha Masters.

He also became the first player to successfully defend a European Tour title since Branden Grace won the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in 2016.

Chawrasia had to return to complete seven holes of his third round in the morning after lightning delays on days one and two at DLF Golf & Country Club, but he showed no adverse effects as he birdied the 13th, 14th (where he chipped in) and 15th holes to get to 9-under-par.

He finished with a 10-under-par 278 victory total in a week where only seven players finished under par.

"This is probably my best win of my career as it was a really tough course," Chawrasia said. "I’m just very, very happy. I learned many things this week and hopefully I can play better in Europe. That’s my target next, I have to win in Europe."

Congratulations, SSP!
