“This is the hardest day of my life. I’m so proud of the way I hung in there. I had to dig so deep. The thoughts were going crazy in my head.”
These were the words of Titleist golf ball loyalist Mackenzie Hughes (Pro V1x) shortly following the Canadian’s first career Web.com Tour title at the Price Cutter Charity Championship and a likely spot on the PGA Tour next season.
The 25-year-old former Kent State player birdied the final hole for a closing 6-under-par 66 and a one-stroke victory over Titleist Brand Ambassador Richy Werenski (Pro V1x), who eagled the final hole to put the pressure squarely on Hughes.
Hughes opted to lay up on the par-5 18th and wedged his approach to within a foot of the hole to set up the clinching birdie.
“That is the moment of my career so far,” Hughes said. “There were some moments where I needed to hit a shot and I needed to make a putt.”
Hughes finished with a 24-under-par 264 victory total and advanced from 88th to 14th on the Web.com money list. The top 25 after the final two regular-season events will earn PGA Tour cards.
