What you need to know: Titleist Golf Club Fitting Experience

"I can't believe what a difference it makes!"

This is how Team Titleist member Chris Hatem described his recent Tour Fitting experience at Titleist's Manchester Lane Test Facility. (Click here to check out Chris's forum thread.)

"When you see how dramatically your ball flight changes, you really start to understand what the right clubs can do for you."

Titleist club fitters will tell you that reactions like Chris's are the norm why more and more golfers are getting fit for their clubs.

Brett Porath, Director of Titleist Club Fitting told us, “Our goal is to help golfers get better. I would like nothing better than to have everyone who buys Titleist clubs spend time with a skilled and well-equipped fitter to unlock the full potential of your equipment.”

(Listen to our club fitting conversation with Brett in the "On the Tee" podcast episode above.)

There many important club specs to consider - the model of clubhead, loft, lie, shaft flex, length, swing weight and overall weight. The chance of finding the best combination If those variables goes way up when you are properly fit. You'll be rewarded with with lower scores and the confidence that your clubs will perform at their best."

So what's involved in a Titleist club fitting? We know from the discussions in the Team Titleist Club Fitting Forum that you have many questions, so we thought we'd ask Brett to shed some light on a few of the basics. Here are some key points from our conversation and you can check out the rest of the interview below.

Quick hits:

  • Find an expert, knowledgeable fitter by speaking with friends or by using the Titleist locator tool.
  • The use of a launch monitor helps diagnose your ball flight with extreme accuracy.
  • Fittings can take as little as 30 minutes or up to three hours depending upon the level of detail you desire and the number of clubs to be fit. Be realistic about how many shots you can hit – it’s better to spread over two sessions and get quality information than to rush and hit shots when tired.
  • An ideal fitting uses your on-course golf ball so we can dial in performance. Select your golf ball based upon short game feel and control – we believe it's best to adjust your driver to match your ball, not the other way around.
  • Communication is key. Throughout your fitting, provide your fitter with as much feedback as possible.
  • Share any physical challenges you may have with your fitter and be sure to mention any swing changes you may be working through.
  • Relax. Some golfers put too much pressure on themselves to perform well. Don't! You are going to miss-hit a few shots during the process and fitters can learn from those shots too.
  • Pace yourself. You are going to hit many shots, especially if you're going through a full-set fitting. Take breaks when needed.
  • Keep an open mind. Preconceived notions about club models, types of shafts, etc. can be limiting. Trust the launch data as well as what you see and feel during testing.
  • Playing the right clubs will make a difference in your game.
