    A majority of the players in the Dunhill Championships aka the Sunshine Tour were playing in shorts with the blessing of the European tour. They made a rules change allowing them to wear them this year. Heard the commentators say it only makes good common sense in the hot and humid conditions. Saw some sweaty shirts after the rounds. It looked different, but it gives them a choice to be comfortable while playing in balmy conditions. Good move European tour committee. Kudos.

    I'd be Lion if I said I enjoyed watching it. The shouldn't Monkey with the look. :)

    So many comedians out of work......even the Lions and Monkey's were baring the heat by hiding under the trees under the where there was lots of shade.....put me in the mood and prepared to go see the broadway production of the Lion King this Saturday night......eleven rows back center stage.....we have season tickets for the Best of Broadway and have for 13 years......this is going to be awesome.....saw the new movie and it was something too......need to go to S Africa.....that was a cute comeback, Dale.....hope we can get a rematch at the TT invitational this year....we got sandbagged last year..... cheers

    I don’t see why they can’t be allowed to wear shorts , it’s hot out there , especially on the pga tour , so why not yes some players may still choose trousers, but at least give them the option

    Agree, give them a choice. The LPGA dress code is a lot more lax. They have choices. I don't see anyone complaining about them wearing shorts.......but if they all were required to wear long pants there would be many complaints and not necessarily by the players.......just sayin'....most of these no shorts votes come from folks that never play in these hot conditions and would never affect them.........I live in an area where the heat index can hit over 110 degrees and play in long pants is just not good common sense......glad they changed the time of the year for the PGA Championships.....I worked the PGA when it was here in Charleston at the Ocean Course August 9-12, 2012, hot, humid, rainy and miserable. Rory ran away from the field using Titleist equipment. The PGA Championship returns May 17-20, 2021, when it will be more tolerable. Hurricane season does not start until June 1st. Give them a choice......

    Let’s face it...it took over 30 years to find out Phil had calves made out of the stuff of legend! I am a traditionalist and they have done wonders in light weight pants fabric, that being said I’d say allow in Thurs and Fri of non majors.

    Interesting subject and equally interesting to see how many stiff upper lip traditionalist golfers out there against the idea, the rule changes for 2019 must have created a real sense of bitterness.

    I am all for shorts, the comfort in hot weather aspect sells it for me. For those who are adamant wearing shorts doesn't look "professional", we watch golf for the golf, not what they are wearing.. this is a sport, not a fashion show. The pro's behaviour and conduct on the field is the most important part of "being professional", not whether they're wearing shorts or trousers.

    It is this attitude and mindset that is holding the game back, it needs to appeal to new and younger generations of players, the more golfers acting in this privileged, "all about tradition" manner, the more new golfers will be put off taking up the game. We have to move with the times and if you're happy to see the LPGA in skirts and shorts but against the PGA taking it on, then this hypocritical opinion is what needs to change.

    We no longer play with wooden shafts, metal spikes in our shoes or leather golf balls.. smart shorts with the right polo and socks is a smart look.

    Monday-Wednesday practice rounds- maybe-yes

    Tournament time- No way, just not professional.

    -It’s not like theses guys are wearing thick wool pants, the materials have come a long way in just the last few years making them light and breathable.

    Definitely allow shorts many of the PGA sections are allowing them at section events. So I believe it is only a matter of time before it occurs on tour

    I agree. I've seen guys wear shorts on TV now and though it took a few minutes, I stopped paying attention to that fact and went back to watching shots.

    I have some questions in my mind. Is not allowing shorts (and it can be specified to have at least a 7 inch length so we don't see PM in Daisy Duke's) both an elitist image and potentially increasingly misogynistic restriction by allowing women to wear skorts? In growing the game and to reduce the elitist view of the game, maybe allowing shorts in a tasteful manner is a way to move forward. It's not like the golf clothing vendors would have to develop lines of shorts.

    Agree on developing lines of shorts. FJ already has in its line some great shorts in 9" and 10" lengths in the same basic colors as their long pants, that their tour players could easily convert to. No worries. With this summer's schedule being "gone with the wind" something for the committee to think about for next when it is time to play in the southwest, south, and southeast in those lazy hazy days of summer. Hey guys, give the pros a break. The LPGA gets to play in comfort and at many lengths. I have played in Memphis at Colonial CC in the summer when the heat index can hit 125*. Where the FEDEx St Judes use to be played. If those committee members had to go play in it for four days, maybe they would change their minds.......

    Mark me down as another traditionalist here. To me, some pros look silly in shorts. Some of them can pull it off, but IMO, many can't. (I'm not namin' names.) Though I personally wear shorts in the summer, I like the look of pants much better and will wear them in summer whenever the temp is forecast to stay below 80ish. Also when looking for my ball in tall grass or high weeds, it makes me feel a bit more protected in pants.

    Be that as it may, if I made the rules as per the OP suggested, I would stick with pants for Tour-level events, but allow shorts for practice rounds and Wednesday Pro-Ams. Ask me again once Major League Baseball changes over to shorts. Being a traditionalist old-schooler, the image of shorts on a Tour golfer or MLB player just doesn't sit right in my head.

    Not all the players would choose shorts, but at least give them an option when those temperatures and heat indexes reach dangerously high numbers. I have seen players coming off the courses with there pants looking as if the fell in one of the ponds. I have seen John Daly in his brand of shorts at the Monday after the Masters Celebrity Pro/AM and not a good look, but at least let them make the choice. I played league and travel softball for 26 years and retired in 1985 and sure glad when we went to shorts. Those hot day and night games/tournaments could be a killer....being a traditionalist, should the all be wearing one standard dress code?

    Seeing John Daly play in long pants and his son in the same material in shorts....that's one reason to allow shorts... A case of less is more.

    my last commet should have said. Should the LPGA have a dress code where all the ladies wear the same style as the men do.....pants or shorts....one or the other.....same difference, but only one style.....and length matters......

    Bigger issues in the world to figure out these days...
    I'm all in for players wearing shorts or athletic styled clothing.
    Yes there is a place for tradition but shorts and performance tee's don't bother me.

    I would say yes to the shorts however I'm not sure that I would get used to the idea of the look. Shorts in practice rounds is a start. We shall see which way it trends.

    I think pants are the way to go for tournament golf. Not joggers and not some of these high water skinny looking jean golfers wear. I also think golf pants should not have external pockets like some of the new styles have. I only wear FJ pants and FJ 1857 pants and they look exactly the way golf pants should.

    I don't care to be honest. I like wearing shorts on the course. Ever through maybe the pros prefer wearing trousers on the course?

    Personally I would not mind it.

    For shorts argument =
    + times have changed, many of us now do business casual at work...why not golfers?
    + comfort (or choice) for the players
    + golf is many times seen as a stodgy, old fart game...maybe shorts would bring in new, younger viewers/fans

    Against shorts argument =
    - Today's long pants material is way lighter, cooler than long pants of the past
    - Long pants look more professional (kind of like interviewing consultants...if Billy Bobs consulting come in wearing tshirts an charges $150 per hour / you likely would instead hire IBM wearing pressed shirts and ties charging $150 per hour as well)
    - It is a generally accepted tradition.
    - Would allow for more outlandish looks / pushing the envelope, eventually someone would go too far and new policies would have to be enacted.

    Thus the reason the PGA Tour has a policy board and reviews these policies annually making changes as they see most beneficial to the players and the tour. They changed the rule for caddies a few years ago and also the rule of facial hair (which was not allowed at all just a few years ago). I think they are doing a pretty good job of balancing tradition and transformation in keeping the tour marketable. All time highs in revenue and player purses. Away from the tour, every course has the right to set dress codes based on their target playing audience which gives everyone the ability to find a place where they feel comfortable.

    They are allowing them on the practice rounds, so there has been some progress. Maybe soon that we see them in the regular rounds. I say live and let live......give them the choice with standards.

    Let the player pick. They have all the incentive to shoot the best score and if they think they can do so in shorts then let them. I play in AZ and grew up playing in shorts so I think its weird to wear pants when I play in CA and its a colder climate.

    They are employees. Most businesses have a dress code or even uniforms. The Tour has a players advisory board where rules and regulations are approved annually. Our opinions should not matter. If they want it to evolve, it will. Same for private clubs. They can set dress code policies for their own club and people can join where they best fit in.
